What would you get?
Permalink Closed

I've been racking up points on mypoints to get a good gift card or a few good gift cards but I have no clue what to get. I am moving into my first apartment in August and starting my first real job so I need stuff for my apartment and appropriate clothing/shoes for work.  I have no bed spread, sheets, kitchen items, etc but I want to get quality stuff you know for the most part.

I have 6,400 points and here are my options:

$10 Target -> 1500 pts

$10 Walmart -> 1500 pts  (easiest choice)

$10 or $25 Linens 'n Things -> 1400 or 3000 pts (good option but I am not in love with the store like I am with Crate and Barrel)

$10, 25, or 50 GAP -> 1300, 3000, or 5750 pts

$25, 50 Macy's -> 3000 or 5750 pts  (seems like best option but unsure)

$25 Overstock -> 3000

$25 Webcertificate (can be used anywhere like a Mastercard) -> 3500 pts (Good but I would probably spend it on movies or books on Amazon which is not what I need)

What would be the best option/options? I have no clue.  I don't even really know what are the apartment basics!

i say overstock--they have wonderful quality sheets for cheap, cheap, cheap.  so i think you could get the most for your money/points there.  oh and since you'll have more points left over, i'd get the wal-mart card, you'll need practical stuff like cleaning supplies, toilet paper, etc. so that'll get used up, no problem.

how fun and good luck with all the moving and stuff!

I say walmart just because there is stuff you need that you aren't even thinking of like a mop & broom - very not fun stuff that if you are like me, you just don't want to spend money on. My mom came to my apartment & bought that stuff for me because I just refused - I had a little hand broom/dust pan set & told her I would "mop" with a wash cloth for all the mopping I had to do (literally about 50 sq ft) but she insisted I needed all that. Always listen to your mother, btw, because you do indeed need it. Also you will need kitchen utensils & stuff like that which is much cheaper at walmart than target, although target has much cooler stuff! But to get even further off subject, do check the dollar stores, Big Lots type places for big kitchen utensils because really, a big plastic spoon is a big plastic spoon, whether it's $5 or $1.

Having said all that, nothing beats a great set of sheets so if Overstocks is the place for that, maybe do some pre-shopping to make sure there is stuff you want there? I may have to check that out myself - I love good sheets!!!

I have to ask - how in the world did you rack up that many points? I have like 80!

Thanks for the advice.  Luckily I have a bf whose mother is going nuts buying me stuff.  She did mention cleaning supplies but nothing about toilet paper.  I haven't picked colors or anything so I keep giving her the little stuff like utinsels for the kitchen, cookbooks, and she covered bath towels.

I just wish I could figure out what colors to go with!  I have the bathroom done pretty much.  I had nothing better to do and picked stuff out online at BB&B (of course linens 'n things doesn't have it since that is a gc option!).  How coordinated does your apartment have to be?? Should it flow from one room to another?

Laken1- I rack up points by clicking on all those darn emails (I get at least 10 a week).  I sign up for any simple points - surveys, downloads, free samples, etc. Oh and I rack up points ordering from sephora since there isn't one in BR and on overstock.  Overstock is 10 pts per dollar.  Worked great for christmas! Just make sure to click on the link on their page when you buy online.

Would get the Macys $50 card. That's what I did and it arrived in like 2 days.

I choose Macys for clothes (one of the Macys here is pretty good with lots of BCBG, Trina Turk, Juicy, etc) but if you want linens it would be nice to see and touch them first instead of ordering them online.

oooo! i love CC points.  the card i use for work has points and i rack up some big numbers on it!!!  i use my points for starbucks b/c that is the only thing i buy on the road that comes directly out of my pocket.  that way i spend nothing!!! :)

however, for you- i would choose the Macy's card.  that would be your best bet!

Almost anyone you ask will say that their first apartment was a mishmash of odds and ends - hand-me-downs, freebies, cheapies, etc.  I've had my own apartment for 3 years and we just bought real furniture (ie, we like it and it matches and we didn't have to put it together ourselves) last week!  For now, I would hit up discount places like TJ Maxx, Ross, and Marshalls for home accessories to help with the coordination.  Keeps it from being to expensive/tedious when you want to change your style/colors later on.  If you do that you'll probably have the nicest first apartment in the history of first apartments!

As for the 'flow' it depends on how large/open your apartment is.  FH likes a really rustic look and I prefer a more streamlined sophisticated with an ethnic touch, so our compromise is my look in the common/public areas (the kitchen/dining/living rooms) and his in the private area (the bedroom).  At least the contrast isn't so bleeding obvious to visitors then, and we can both live with it (even though I clearly won that compromise ).

Don't forget to post pics when it's all done!

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'm leaning towards macy's since my current comforter I got there and it has lasted 12 years and still looks brand new.  Depends though on if I find something and I see it on Overstock then I might get it there.  Tough Decisions.

LMonet- I am hitting up TJ Maxx and Marshalls for kitchen and bedding.  I also tend to hit up polo outlet or Watsuma for bedding.  My poor polo sheets lasted all through college and now and they are still in excellent condition and they were outlet mall sheets.  I have some stuff kinda accumulating so next week when I have a moment I'll take some pics of placemats/napkins and my bathroom stuff I like.

Oh Bex its not CC points.  Its email points - completely free without spending $$$.  You get points for reading email and shopping online.  If you want more info pm me.
