Summer Books?
Permalink Closed

It's summer and I'll be traveling a bit so I'm looking for some light, entertaining reads.  Currently, I'm reading Bergdorf Blondes...it's ok...but I find it hard to like the main character...she has just about no redeeming qualities about her.  Anyways, any suggestions would be much appreciated!  Thanks!!!

Hmm what have you read already?

I like books by sophie kinsella (shopaholic series, can you keep a secret, there is a new one coming out in July)

Making Minty Malone was good (can't remember the name of the author) but it is a thick book

Harry Potter books are cute and a fun read - actually any kid book is fun to read as an adult and light.

Also the Bridget Jones books are a cute fun read.

Check out Amazon for recommendations based on books that you like (search for that title and then there is a section that says others who have bought this book also got these) and you can buy them used on there or on half.com for next to nothing.

this may not be light enough, but after all the recommendations here, I read "The Red Tent." It was incredible, I couldn't put it down!!

i just finished "little children" by tom perrotta, and couldn't put it down.  it's funny and insightful -- not super light, but not terribly heavy either.  the new harry potter comes out on 7/16.  i can't wait for that.

i am loving simon doonan's newest "nasty" which i am reading currently... written very a la david sedaris.  he also wrote "confessions of a window dresser" and "wacky chicks"

speaking of David Sedaris- if you haven't read any of his books they are very entertaining!  i recommend all of them..

I just read "Something Borrowed" by Emily Griffin.  I couldn't put it down!!  What a juicy book.  I can't wait to get the second one, "Something Blue."

shopchicago33 mentioned The Lovely Bones , which is an EXCELLENT book. However, I wouldn't read it if you were looking for a light book. It is a short read, but the material is very heavy and somewhat depressing.

I am very very meticulous with my summer reading list.  I stalk reading lists everyday......and I research, research, research.  And I just made my order with Amazon today.  Here is what I decided on:

The Coast of Akron - Adrienne Miller

Slammerkin - Emma Donoghue

Specimen Days - Michael Cunnigham

The Glass Castle: A Memoir - Jeannette Walls

The Mermaid Chair:  A Novel - Sue Monk Kidd

A Long Way Down - Nick Hornby

A Short History of Tractors in the Ukraine: A Novel - Marina Lewycka

Sorry - I meant to mention that in my original post.  It is definitely heavy.  Same goes for The Notebook.

I've read The Lovely Bones and I highly recommend it.  Also, recommend The Notebook and Dave Sedaris...he's got hilarious stuff.  I kinda skip around when it comes to book genres...but I'm into chicklit for the summer.  Can anyone tell me more about Can You Keep a Secret by Sophia Kinsella or The Devil Wears Prada?

I loved Can you Keep a Secret.  It was a cute chicklit book but it didn't make you feel stupid for reading it and it had nothing to do with shopping, fashion, designers, etc.  I loved it.  It is either filming this year or next year for the big screen staring Kate Hudson (just FYI).  I don't think you would be disappointed if you read it.

The Devil Wears Prada I didn't like.  It was all hyped up for a while as a great book and when I checked it out the library and started reading it I hated it.  I don't think I got further than 5 chapters when I brought it back.  I know its supposed to be satirical regarding fashion but it just aggravated me.
