Calling All Toned bodies re: Birth Control
Permalink Closed

Sorry for the weird subject line, but I am freaking out!  I had never been on birth control until after the birth of my daughter last year. I've been hearing rumors that Minera IUD & other BC in general causes weight gain & makes it extremely hard to lose weight.

I have found it very hard to get my flat, hard tummy back & tone my whole body in general, but I thought it was because I'm older, and my metabolism slowed & my body has changed, up until I heard the weight gain issue on a baby forum I frequent.  I see a lot of toned, hot body mommies at the gym all the time, so I find it hard to believe they must use some secret birth control that doesn't cause weight gain.  Am I missing something here?  or is this a myth?

I think it depends on the person.  I don't think bc causes major weight gain though.  I've been on Ortho Tri Cyclen for years and I didn't gain any weight at all..if anything, my boobs got bigger, but that's it.

I agree w/ shopchicago33 a friend of mine and my sister in law are on Ortho Tri Cyclen and both of their boobs got bigger, but they didn't gain any weight.

I didn't see my friend for 9 months and when I finally did see I thought she had gotten a boob job. I finally said "Okay, what is going on w/ you jugs?" She told me that she was on Ortho Tri Cyclen.

I gained weight on OTC both in the boob area and in other areas.  Some bc pills can cause weight gain in the 5-10 pound range.  Yasmin is one of the few that is marketed as a non weight gaining pill (it actually helps you lose 5-10).  I would just keep working out and varying your diet and routine some more before changing the medicine.

i don't think its your BC entirely. i've been on it and off of it for many years and it's never affected my weight (i never got bigger boobs out of the deal either though)

the birth of a child... oh my how that will change your body! (your daughter is a little cutie, btw!) i don't quite know how to put into words HOW my body has changed, but it has for sure and i attribute it to childbirth. it's not weight gain so much as the consistency of my body... i feel i'm a little "softer" than i used to be.

how old is your sweetie? maybe you need to give yourself a little more time to zap back into your old body!

The one time I took Ortho Tri Cyclene for about 8 months (for acne, not for birth control) it did make me a little pudgier and made me feel nauseated, it also worsened my Melasma.  I am very sensitive to meds though, I know it has little side effects on lots of girls.

My friend was on ortho and gained significant weight. It was not just the pills though, she also changed her lifestyle/eating habits.

I was on a lower dosage bc and I gained about 5/10 lbs. I mostly kept the same habits, but I have heard that bc causes water retention for some ppl and that is where the extra weight comes from. I also find that when I am on bc I have a bigger appetite...

Thank you for everyone's comments.  I do have a bigger appetite than before, hubby & I dont go out EVERY weekend anymore, & I have a sedentary job, so I do attribute the bigger weight loss challenge to that.  What really freaked me out was the other moms gave me the impression they started putting on weight for no reason.  Some even said they hardly ever ate & still put on weight.  I guess I'm being hard on myself cuz everyone says, "It takes 9 mths to put on the weight, its going to take 9 mths to take it off".  My daughter turns 1 in 3 weeks & I keep telling myself I'm almost 3 months past the time I should have been back to my hot self.

I was on Ortho-Cyclen for six months and didn't gain any weight.  Then I got on Depo-Provera for about 18 months and gained 40 pounds.  I know 10 girls who were on the shot and all but two gained a significant amount of weight.  So yeh, I would never recommend the shot to anyone.  There are many, many options of birth control out there and every woman will have a different experience with each one.  Talk to your doctor if you think yours might be causing weight gain.

I think how your body readjusts (?) after having a baby would depend on several things including how fit you were before becoming pregnant and how your mom and other female relatives fared after pregnancy.  Skin elasticity is mostly a genetic thing so you know, if your mom's body bounced right back after having you, chances are your body will bounce right back, too.  Those hardbodies in the gym were probably working out consistently before and during their pregnancy so reverting back to their 'old bodies' wasn't hell on them.  So basically, if you have good genes and you were fit pre-preg, you should be fine.  Just keep up the healthy lifestyle and remember your body won't change overnight.  If you're on the other end of the spectrum, you might need to work a little harder and more intensely (after your body has healed) and it might take a bit longer than usual, but you'll get there.  Just don't give up!

I don't know how having a baby affects your body (having never had one), but I was on orthocyclen for about 7-8 years and it never caused me to gain weight. I've been on seasonale now for a month and I haven't gained weight. Actually I've lost a little but that doesn't have anything to do with the pill.

I think the pill only affects people if they change their eating/workout habits. If you think about it (and this doesn't apply to all) but probably a lot of women get on the pill when they get in relationships. And everyone knows that it's super easy to put on that 5/10 pounds of honey comfy weight. You know, hey honey, let's go out to dinner tonight. Hey honey, let's go get ice cream. I'm so comfy here watching tv with you that I don't want to go to the gym, etc. I'm not sure how accurate my theory is but that's my thoughts on the weight gain issue. Come to think of it though, my boobs did get bigger. Nice. If only I could go through that phase again!

How are you liking the Seasonale? I've been debating about swithching. I've been on ortho for so long I'm afraid to try something else.
