Well, I can tell you the basic difference.  Anyone with more detailed differences, feel free to correct me!

Yoga:  Overall stretching/toning, very relaxing.  Makes your muscles lean.

Pilates:  Focuses on your core muscles---meaning your abs.

Eh, that's about what I know...

CarrieS is right.  Also, pilates lengthens and leans your muscles as well.  so if you are looking for overall toning, i would go with pilates.  yoga for me is a way to relax, unwind and lose myself in the music and relaxation.

side note: a few years ago, i was doing a LOT of cardio and completley stopped and did yoga and pilates exclusively.  although i could feel myself getting stronger b/c i had stopped doing cardio- i was getting "chubby"... def. keep on doing your cardio in addition to pilates/yoga

I prefer yoga.  I feel I get a better workout from it.  If you have cable tv check the Oxygen channel for a program called Inhale.  It is probably on early in the morning.  Tape it if you can and give it a try.  This is the program I use.  Steve Ross rocks!

The exact same thing happened to me.  Even tho I truly believe you can get a good sweaty workout w/ yoga, I gained weight while I was doing it a lot.  I was super strong, but also had a nice fat layer.

I've gone back to doing more cardio, but I still do a Pilates DVD two times a week in addition to my regular workouts.  My DH tells me it has improved my butt.

Here are my fave Pilates DVDs if you are interested:

I liked this one as a beginner:  Pilates Beginning Mat Workout - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005M1XE/qid=1118783404/sr=1-14/ref=sr_1_14/102-1411944-6089711?v=glance&s=dvd

I also like this one:  Pilates Intermediate Mat Workout - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000067D1D/qid=1118783404/sr=1-18/ref=sr_1_18/102-1411944-6089711?v=glance&s=dvd

I like this one too.  It has a lot of different workouts on it.  I like it because some of them are really short, like 10-20 minutes, and I can do them as a little pick me up in the morning without investing a whole bunch of time.  Pilates Complete For Everyone - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000085EFC/qid=1118783536/sr=1-33/ref=sr_1_33/102-1411944-6089711?v=glance&s=dvd

If you want somethng with more of a kick to it, I really like Crunch's fat burning pilates DVD. There are too workout on it- one is faster and less traditional, the other is good for relaxation. There is also about 10 minutes of ab work at the end on the faster workout.
