I don't know, but it always seems much, much colder on new year's eve than on the the day before or after. But it is generally butt-cold.

The streets are very crowded, but it is still possible to visit the main touristy sites, but you'll have to allot more time in line/getting to places and carry alcohol to calm your nerves because it is hectic and nerve-wracking. I've lived here for 13 years or so and I love the beauty of New York at Christmas time, but I also get peeved by the cold weather -- wind & snow -- and the crowds.

I would recommend finding inexpensive bars/restaurants/cafes near your destinations where you can slip in to warm up, clear your head and escape from the crowds.

Clothes -- shearling & cashmere both work well because they're not too bulky. Shoes -- hiking boots are great, but not super stylish.

Depending on how many days you'll be here, decide what you HAVE to see now and what can wait until another visit.

i love nyc in the winter.. but the cold can be harsh. this year wasn't too bad and there are beautiful touristy things to do in nyc that are strictly winter-only (like ice-skating in central park or at rockefeller center, the christmas tree at rockefeller center, seeing the christmas windows on fifth avenue, etc).... i think winter in the city is a very special thing... and alot of the "must-see" things i can think of in the city, i can't think of one that's strictly warm weather-only... i would maybe want to skip the ride out the statue of liberty or ellis island (that ferry may be too freezing).

i have never done the new year's thing but it seems exciting but something that i've never been interested in doing (maybe because i live in the area). but i think it could be really cool!

i think sometimes walking in the cold in nyc is better than walking around when it's 100 degrees and so humid you actually feel like you're pushing against this heavy, humid, wet air when you're walking for blocks and blocks.

i've lived here for almost 5 years, and haven't gone to the new year's in times square. this is largely because i just don't like being in huge crowds of people like that, and it's usually cold but this year it wasn't. but if that's not something that bothers you it could be okay. i don't mean to be a wet blanket -- my new year's preferences are usually a small party with friends, nothing huge!

if you do come at that time, just be prepared for a lot of walking and big crowds, and also for hotels to be more expensive. i do love christmas here and it's a really nice time.

i would probably skip times square...i'm not a fan of the masses. not to sound like an elitist, but i always end up standing near really annoying a**holes. plus if you want a good spot you have to get there so early, like in the morning.

i also love the city at christmas, it's like everything glows. plus you can tour all the store windows (that's one of my favorite things to do). also it's usually not that cold -- well that's relative. but nothing that a few good layers can't combat.
