Funeral attire - all black still appropriate?
Permalink Closed

So I have a funeral to attend this week, and I haven't been to one in a really long time (thank goodness).  I don't dress up much in my regular life anymore, so I have limited options when it comes to somber dress up occasions.  I can do head-to-toe black, but I was wondering if that is still 'done'?  I wouldn't wear brights with my black, but I was thinking grey, or burgundy, or something like that to break it up a bit.  Maybe as a colored blouse under a black cardi w/black pants and shoes?

I feel kind of horrified that I'm worried about what to wear to a funeral, but I tried on the dress I thought I'd go with and it looked much more tarty than I remember.  So, this is just me, trying not to show up at a funeral dressed like a tart!

I think you can do head-to-toe black (it's what I always do, maybe with a white button-down under my black sweater or whatever). I think grey is OK too.

Thank you!  I just didn't want to show up in something not totally black and look inappropriate ....

I usually wear my gray or black pencil skirt and a darker colored cardi (blue, burgundy, dark purple) with a white cami. I wear a delicate necklace and depending on the weather either black heels or black boots with conservative tights.

I think that as long as you dress with respect to the somber occasion, you'll be fine. I'm always amazed at how inappropriately some people show up to a funeral. I went to one this summer for our grade school music teacher and some people were actually in jeans! I mean, if you can't get it together to wear some regular pants to a funeral, when can you?

I'm sorry about your loss.  My condolences.

I find that mourners are relatively uncritical and non-judgmental at funerals. Sometimes just showing up is what counts...after my father and my grandmother died in the span of less than three months, I honestly couldn't tell you what anyone wore to the various services and funerals. I'm sure tons of people wore jeans to my grandma's funeral since there were probably 400 people there, and it's a very blue-collar community, but I couldn't have cared less. I was just glad they wanted to come.

But I totally get your point, and I agree with it 100% that people should understand when not to wear jeans.

I think black pants or skirt with a dark-colored top/sweater/whatever would be perfectly fine. All black isn't really a rule anymore that I can tell.

I think anything muted or understated looks fine - doesn't have to be all black.

Oh I can't remember what I wore to my grandmother's funeral earlier this year. I know I wore a black dress to the wake but the funeral was definitely black pants and a sweater of some type - dark purple maybe.
