Oral Sedation Dentistry, any experience?
Permalink Closed

ok, so here's the thing, I have a "fear" of dentists.  No, not sweaty-palms nervous fear, not even jittery-naseua nervous.  We are talking, tears streaming down your face, can't be in the vacinity, terrified to death, paralyzing fear.  I am not being dramatic.  All logic is out the window with this one...

So I really need some work done.  I found a dentist in my area who performs oral sedation dentistry (take a pill and sleep right though it).  Anyone done this or know someone who has?

I have not done this, but I would just be careful w/ any kind of procedure that involves being put under when you are not in a hosiptal.

My mom is an anesthesiologist and I hear all the horror stories about people who have a negative reaction to an anthestic. When she is at a hosiptal it is not usually a huge deal they have the equimpment to take care of you, but if you are not at a hospital they have to take you to a hospital.

My bf's brother had his wisdom teeth taken out @ a dentist office and they put him under. His heart stopped beating and he had to be rushed to the ER. Luckily the ER was only mins. away or they don't think he would have survived. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled my mom would not let me be put under. I just had novacaine.

I know this is easy for me to say (because I am not crazy ), but I would try to go through it w/ out being put under. There are places that offer hypnosis or you could just get really drunk before. Good luck!

I am deathly afraid of needles so can't do the whole novacane thing- so when I was a kid and needed teeth pulled or whatever they would give me laughing gas stuff that made me sleep for a bit and then get really loopy (it was kind of fun). Basically it would space me out so much that I had no clue what was going on around me... something like that might be a good option for you too.

I had my wisdom teeth removed by an oral surgeon and he used Penathol via an IV to put me to sleep.  I did not have any problems, but them again he is an oral surgeon and not a dentist.

I tried it with gas once too, and still could not do very well.

FYI guys it's not general antestetic (sp?), they give you a pill, kind of like Xanax it's a Benzo, so I'm not knocked out completely. The medication basically turns of the anxiety receptors in your brain. However you can get loopy and very drowsey so a lot of people actually sleep through the work. The med wear off in 3 hours or so, usually you go home a sleep and when you wake up have little or no memory of the whole procedure. Also the dentist have to be licensed and trained for the procedure.
