CC Debt- Got a question...
Permalink Closed

We refinanced our house in March and took out a second mortgage on the house for $25,000 (a home equity line of credit).  We just realized that as of this month, the interest rate on the second jumps up to almost 8%.  It's all there in the loan paperwork, guess we just didn't read it close enough (of course the loan officer didn't tell us).  We both have excellent credit, so I'm pretty sure one or both of us could get cc's w/ no interest (we have about 3 GREAT cc's that we haven't paid interest on in forever.  For new purchases AND balance transfers), for the amount of the second.  Do you think it would be wise to "charge" the mortgage?  Would that affect my credit score too much?  I was just going to call one of the cards and ask for an increase, but I thought I'd check with all you smarties here before we jumped into this.

I personally wouldnt put it on my credit card. Call the bank or loan company and try to get the loan changed to a fixed interest rate.

I'm pretty sure they won't change the interest rate.  We are paying 4% now on our house, so even w/ the 2nd rate being so high, our payment is less.  We JUST re-financed and there is a penalty for early pay-off, so we'd have to leave some on the loan.  Maybe $500 or so.  It just seems like we'd save so much money not paying the 8% interest.  We could pay it off in a couple of years that way.  Maybe half on a credit card would be better?  We have basically no cc debt right now.  ARGH.  I wish I had my own personal financial advisor!
