If you are looking for real things to do then I am not sure, but I have been camping there w/ my brother and we hit the goofy touristy places. We usually only do outdoor and historical stuff, so I can't help you w/ the shopping part.

Ruby Falls on Lookout Moutain- it is an underground waterfall and it is pretty cool.

Rock City This is pretty cool too. You walk through all these rocks and it is cool to hike. They have this Swing-A-Long Bridge that makes me panic and freak out everytime we go on it. Just the thought of it is making me sweat. There is this really neat spot that they call Deer Park- or smething like that. There are a few speices of deer and you can see them hanging out.

Lookout Moutain This is the really steep railroad that takes you along the moutain.

There is also a state park and I believe it is called Park Point or Point Park (not sure). It is cool because there was a civil war battle there and Grant was supppose to have stood there. I dig history, so I thought it was cool.

They have a pretty cool aquarium too.

Hope that helps.

I second all of RyanJ's suggestions.  If you are going to have the weekend free and will have a car, then I would suggest that you either make the 2 hour trip to Nashville and take in some live music/shop or that you make the 2 hour trip to Atlanta to shop.

Me three!  I went to all three of these places when I was in Chattanooga for 48 hrs.  I love all the civil war historical landmarks and Rock City has this wonderful high lookout point where you can see multiple states from where you stand.  I HIGHLY suggest getting there right when it opens because it does get hot and you will want to beat the crowds, or go on a weekday if possible so you can take your time enjoying the view.  Same for Ruby Falls, the cave has some seriously tight spots, and it sucked being stuck in there with a big crowd of people to follow along single file....not for the claustrophobic, but very interesting if you are into the science and history of it all.

I didn't do any shopping and I think we just ate at Macaroni Grill, our main goal was lots of picture taking.

I live in Chattanooga! When are you going to be here? It is a fun town but it is mostly touristy stuff...We have a big festival called Riverbend that just started last night and lasts until the 18th. http://www.riverbendfestival.com/  There is lots of music and food and it is on the river. It's pretty fun even if you just go to watch all the horribly dressed people!

If you are looking for shopping there is not really anything special, unless you like Antiques. There are antique stores everywhere(I can give you directions to the best if you want). We do have a big mall http://www.hamiltonplace.com/mall/hamilton/hamilton.nsf/Main?OpenForm but it is just the basic stores that are everywhere...There is an outlet mall downtown that has a few good stores in it http://www.primeoutlets.com/cntrdefault.asp?cntrid=1044 .

All of the things that RyanJ mentioned are great....Here is a website about things to do in Chattanooga. http://www.chattanoogafun.com/ The new riverwalk is great and so is the Aquarium. Alot of the stuff on the river is new, just in time for the Riverbend festival so is will be really crowded if you are here in the next 2 weeks.

Also if you do have time I second jah's suggestion to go to Atlanta or Nashville if you can!

If you have any questions just let me know!
