How would you style this skirt?

I bought this skirt and am drawing a blank on how to style it (Catholic school uniform survivor so it's taken me 19 years to buy another plaid skirt. ashamed)  It's from the GAP.  I'd definitely want to wear tights (although it's not as short on me as in the photo.)  The colors are red and shades of gray.  The buttons can be undone to access the pockets.

I'm pretty short waisted and have a larger chest so turtlenecks and crewnecks are out.

Any suggestions on what to pair it with?  Styles?  Colors?  Bueller?

A few outfits I found on polyvore:

Just a few ideas even though I know some won't work for you (like the last set; you said no turtleneck, but maybe a v-neck instead?).

I think it's best to err on the side of conservative with this kind of item. I would do tights with knee-high flat boots and a solid-color top like a long-sleeved tee or ballet-neck sweater. Most button-front shirts, cardigans, or blazers will be too "uniformy" IMO.

My first thought was this sweater in black (which I just got and LOVE!)913363_004_b?$redesign-appcat$
tights and knee high boots or shoes like pictured with it.

Thanks! I'm still paying around with it. I wore it Sat with a navy cardi, gray tank, gray tights and my black silver wedge boots. I was happy with it, but still want a few outfits out of it.
