Yesterday after 3 day of major pain I finally went to the dentist and he started a root canal on a badly infected tooth. He'll finish it in two weeks when the infection has died down. In the meantime I'm on a penicillin and percocet regimen. And every time I take the percocet I get really dizzy and loopy...tunnel vision...tunnel hearing. I'm having trouble eating because of the tooth. Anyone know if there's something I can eat/drink to make it feel a bit better?
I had percoset after I had my appendix out. My doc told me not to take it on an empty stomach. I couldn't get any food down, and had the same problems as you. I would try to take it with a liquid, like soup or a smoothie. Something as close to "food" as you can eat with your tooth pain. I started with v8 juice and moved up to tomato soup. It helped a little, but I was still too loopy to function very well.
This won't quite help you now, but tell your dentist to give you something else when you go back. If Percocet isn't right for your system, there's plenty other pain meds that he can give you.
My sister had a really nasty reaction to Vicodin when she got her wisdom teeth out. After two days of throwing up, we went back and got her different meds. I forget what she got put on instead, though.
Broth is also a good starter food, a little broth every so often and hopefully you should be able to work up to larger amounts of food.

ugh. i totally feel your pain. i had a bunch of wisdom teeth taken out last summer. i agree with the other girls, maybe it doesn't go well with your system. i basically lived off things like soup, pudding, hot cereal (malt o meal, oatmeal, etc.), scrambled eggs, bread broken up into small peices, things like that. the smoothie idea is great. you could add all sorts of things to them to make them more filling. hope you feel better soon!

I'd call the doc or the nurse, explain the problem and see if they can call in another prescription. There are a few different prescription pain meds, like Suasoria said, and getting you on another one shouldn't be a problem. I think people react to meds in different ways, so this is probably something they've dealt with before. Take care of yourself and I hope you feel better soon!
Hi Tati: I am feeling better now at the end of the week! I ended up splitting the doses in half for both the percocet and penicillin which helped. And I spent a week living on room temperature soups and applesauce. Next week I'll have the 2nd half of the root canal done and the dentist will 'rebuild' half the tooth for me so I don't look like a gap-toothed freak! ;)
