Has anyone been to the Mall of America in Minnesota? My girl friend just asked me if I'd be interested in going for a long weekend. We live in Chicago and are thinking we'd drive and stay in a cheap hotel/motel. Anyone been - how is the mall, and can anyone recommend good/cheap hotels? Thanks!
I go several times a year and it's pretty cool. If you've never been, a sense of awe might happen, just from the sheer size of it. I mean, it is BIG. Having a mini amusement park in the middle of it is kind of cool too, since those aren't that common.
I'm personally not all that awed when I go, other than the fact that I get to leave Iowa for a day , but this is probably because I do go quite frequently. They do have stores there that I don't otherwise have access to, so that's definitely a cool thing, but they also have a lot of typical mall stores, plus multiples of some (American Eagle and Victoria's Secret come to mind).
Overall, it'll be cool to experience if you've never been.
As far as hotels, the only time I stayed in one up there was at the, I *think*, Clarion Inn, which was about 20 miles away.
I can definitely say that I WILL be excited to go up there in September, when H&M is suppose to open, as well as Sephora.
I've been there. CarrieS is right - it's soooooo big! FH and I were there for 3 hours and only got through 1 quarter of 1 floor! It's also where I scored a bathing suit for $1.97, so it holds a fond place in my heart . Definitely allow an entire day (or more) to do the entire mall.

I live in Minneapolis so my thoughts on the Mall of America are going to be a little biased since I have easy access to it. It's a great mall in the sense that it pretty much has every kind of store you would ever want to shop in. However, since it does hold so many stores, it's a pain to navigate - the place is HUGE and you have to have the physical stamina to shop, deal with the crowds and walk miles to get from one place to another. Besides it's sheer size, I can't say there is anything special about MOA (as the locals call it). If you live in Chicago you probably already have access to all the stores that are in the Mall. But if you're looking for a fun shopping weekend, it is nice to have everything in one place - plus it's fun to say you've been there.
As for lodging, there are plenty of hotels and motels within a mile radius that you could stay at. None of them are super fancy so I think you could find a good rate. Also, there is a light rail train that connects MOA with downtown Minneapolis so you can head into the city for dining or going out at night.
Let me know if you have any other questions!!!!

I went last year for the first time. It is huge.. and probably something all shopaholics should visit once it their lives...
but for me... It was just like any other mall or strip mall that you've been too.. with all the stores you normally see (just combined in one BIG place). It was nice having them all in one location.. but it was your standard mall stores.. Nothing specatular about the selection or items.. Everything you could find somewhere closer to your home. JMO!
4 of the people i work with live in Minneapolis and a couple of the chains carry our products so i was in and out of the Mall of America a lot but didn't get to do any shopping- just window shopping while i was working...
i thought it was okay... but a lot of the stores that were there i already have access too... so i didn't get to worked up over it.
