so i received a graduation announcement, (not an invitation to the ceremony or party or whatever) from a woman i USED to work with, for her son whom i've never met.
do i get him a gift? and if i am supposed to get him a gift, what do i get an 18 yr old boy who is going into the air force? i haven't talked to this woman in months and i'm just confused.

Umm if you aren't working with her anymore and you haven't talked to her in months I don't think you have to get a gift or send money. That is a tad tacky to me.
what? there is nothing tacky about her sending the annoucement about her child so long as you are someone she knows, there is no reason to consider it a request for gifts either, since when do people have that idea? she sent you the announcement because she is proud of her son and wants to share his accomplishment, not because he needs your presents!

i don't think it's mean of you to question her motives--i personally knew people who sent announcements to the most random people SOLELY to get cash. they freely admitted this to me and i remember thinking--ew...tacky.
anyway, we'll never know if she's just proud or just tacky but whatever the case i don't think you're obligated to get a gift.

My cousin is digging up people she hasn't talked to in years and inviting them to her bridal showers and wedding. It is riduculous.

Yup, thats how I see it.
She's just letting you know and proud of her son, that's all I'm sure. If it was an invitation, then of course a gift if you were to go to it........

I HATE when people do that. My boyfriends graduation party for high school there were about 500 people invited and he knew about 30 of them. His mother just invited everyone they knew in order to get money. I think that is so tacky when people do that. She is going to so pissed when my bf and I get married. She is not going to have a say in who is invited and we are going to keep it small.
I wouldn't worry about a gift. If you hardly know the women and have never met her son then there is no reason to get him anything. He just graduated from high school. I don't see the point in sending an annoucement to a person that the kid has never even met. Great you graduated form highschool- most people do. Send me an annoncement when he finds the cure for aids then I will be impressed.

No gift. If it was in fact an innocent and proud announcement, great, no gift. If it was a blatant attempt to extract money from everyone and their dog, you need to nip this behaviour. Sending anything would only perpetuate the tackiness.
And RyanJ, the last two lines in your post made me laugh!!!
I remember announcements being a device for money when I was going for school. At least that's all the kids talked about it. I don't think I even bought announcements; I'm so anti-everything.
