How to hint for bday gifts
Permalink Closed

My birthday is next saturday (May 7th). I am completely an OCD list addict, if you tell me to start a Christmas list today, I can do that & put 50 things on it. But my DH won't allow me to give him a list of things I want for my birthday because he thinks it's no fun & not spontaneous, he wants me to give him hints
I know he has gotten me a few things, and we are going shopping to get shoes I want (in brown, I am also addicted to all things animal print)

But now he is saying "i need more hints for your birthday" - ladies, I have shown him exact things that I want from the pages of Lucky, picked them up in the store & said - "I really like this gown - I need it in a size L" - I HINTED & received a charm bracelet for valentines so that he would have a built in easy gift (which I have to assume he got), he knows I want to start embrodiery, I showed him the kit I want on Amazon & even said "If I got this & the Gwen Stefani CD, it would qualify for free shipping" - you know what he said???? "then you ought to get it"
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

He says my hints are too stuble, but if i directly say "you could get this for my birthday" he gets mad / offended like then it won't be a surprise???? How do you handle this? Do you tell him what you want? I once told him that my ex basically gave me a budget & I shopped for myself so this is NOT an option because he thought that was mean & not thoughtful (true, but effective for getting what I really wanted). HELP

Maybe leave the computer screen up with the thing you want?  I have no idea.  While going clothing shopping with him you should try on some things you want and have him oohh and ahh.  You can say things like, wow, the lace on this hem is so pretty.  Maybe he'll pick one of the things that you like the most/he likes the most.  All in all, I don't really expect to get exactly what I want from my bf, I don't want to be too demanding and i like what he picks on his own.

Use the little tabs in Lucky and mark all the things you want. Leave the catalogs, notes, magazines, etc. on his bedstand or on the coffeetable - anywhere he normally looks. He might think he found a clever way to gift for you all on his own!

my SO is exactly like yours in that he doesn't get my not so subtle "hints" either.

Pretty much i have bluntly re-worded what I want for my b-day(the whole sex in the city series). It goes like this:

"I love the show! I can't wait until I own the whole series. I am hoping the birthday fairy will drop it off"

"I was talking to Janet about the show and I mentioned that I would be getting the series soon so she could come over and watch it with me"

as blunt as possible without saying the exact words "this is what I want"

hints??????  i don't hint honey- i drag him to the store and show him exactly what i want and have the salesperson write down the brand, style number, whatever it takes so that he gets the right thing when he goes back...

i have also gone to jewelry stores and picked out various little baubles that i liked and had the salesperson from the store call him directly and say "your girlfriend was in our store today and i know she has a birthday coming up and she picked out a few things that you may be interested in purchasing for her."

ain't no subtle about it in my book- he knows exactly what i want!  but i give him 4-5 choices so that i am "surprised" by what he ends up choosing...

I am the same way Bex- screw hints. This is what I want, so get it for me. I have a webpage that links exaclty to the item I want and I also print out a list of everything with all the info he needs- size, color, style, item number, price and alternatives incase my first choice in unavailable.

Thanks ladies, I think he will do fine, I will let you know.

And gee, RyanJ, I thought I was OCD - "a webpage that links exaclty to the item I want and I also print out a list of everything with all the info he needs- size, color, style, item number, price and alternatives incase my first choice in unavailable"?????? LOL - that is the greatest thing I have ever heard - are you my long lost sister???

And Rocky, in his defense he did get me the complete Sex in the City DVD collection although he hates it & won't watch one episode when he got a big bonus & we both got $1,000 to spend on whatever we wanted! I loved that he used part of his for me!!!!!!

And I was really frustrated when I wrote that post, but I'm sure he will do fine - he always does. I'm the type that although I'd love to get some pretty & $$$ jewelry, I was equally excited when he put a highlighter with built in sticky notes in my stocking at Christmas because he knew I would love that!! I'm just frustrated with the daily "I need stuff for your bday" comment when I've been dropped hints for weeks!!!

If he hasn't picked up on your obvious hints, there's not much else to do, eh?

Why not just write a list of things you want (title it THINGS I NEED TO BUY) and leave it stuck on the refrigerator.  That way, he'll see it and he can't ever say he didn't know what you wanted....if he ignores it then he probably thinks he can figure out something to get for you that you never knew you wanted....good luck.

I wish that worked for me.  I have done this, and my husband even comments on the cute things I tagged....but as of yet, I haven't gotten any of these particular items for birthday or Christmas.  He did buy me a pair of Seven's once, so he's still good.
