Well my mind is leaning towards one thing a lot more than the other, but i want to hear all your input. I am going to be a junior next yr in college and i am planning on going to med school. I will have to stay at college an extra yr since i JUST recently changed my major to biology. I also (last semester) joined our competitve dance team. I have dance all my life and it has always been my passion. I finally got the courage to try out and i made it! We just went to nationals in daytona, FL and got 4th in our division. It was the best time of my life! Now...here is the dilemma...my advisor just sent me (and all the other bio majors) an email about a doctor looking for 2 college students for part time positions in his office. I know this would be an excellent opportunity for me to work there next year, but there is no way i can dance next year AND do this. Before i knew about this job opening, i was planning on doing dance for just next year because ive only done it for one semester but fell in love with it sooooo much. I wanted a full year of it, esp since my WHOLE team is coming back and we are determined to get 1st at nationals next yr. I was planning on volunteering at the hospital my senior year instead of working because i know volunteering is a MUST for med schools. So now i am stuck between doing dance for one more year, or taking this job (but who knows if ill even get it?). My mom obviously thinks i should try the job since i can get a feel for being a doctor. I told her that i'll do something like that the year after because i have had my heart set on being on my dance team for at least one more year. I know that if i dont do dance, i will regret it and be unhappy but taking the job (if i get it) will be beneficial to my future.....what do i do?!?!
Others may disagree with me- but I say do the dance team. Opportunities in the professional world will continue to come your way but you do not always have the chance to be a kid. Coming from a business school student (surrounded by the get ahead mentality), I think that you'll be ok if you don't jump on your first internship/volunteering opportunity. Everyone around me thinks they need a great job right out of college. I don't. You have your whole life to work. Of course- I have somewhat bohemian tendencies and would like to be a fashion designer, so that's a different story. I have a friend that is pre-med- she started interning at NIH her senior year. You could possibly even do something the summer after junior year and into your senior year. If this opportunity came so easily, another one will come again..
this is not a tough one. you know you really want to dance, you know you'll be sad if you don't. so get out there and dance your heart out! have a ball, you're only 19 once.
oh as for the med school thing: study hard, get good grades and kick a** on the mcat. getting into med school is extremely competitive and grades and scores are what they'll be looking @.
Do another year of dance. I did ballroom and folk dancing my first two years of school. I wouldn't give up that time for the world...those were the best times of my life! You should have as much fun as you can...you've got plenty of time! My last two years of school, I buckled down and did internships in the field I wanted to work in.
Plus, my understanding is that it's really good to be well-rounded and not just focused on getting into med school when the time comes to apply.
I figured I'd be in the minority, but I can see everyone that answered so far agrees - I think if you are going to have to intern in your senior year anyway, do dance team. I know the job is good experience, but boy I wish I had more fun in college instead of working all the time while everyone else had a life! I agree that you are only young once, it's your only shot at an opportunity like that. Are you watching Grey's Anatomy? You are reminding me of Izzie, the girl who modeled during med school & they call her Dr. Model. You will be "Dr. Dancer"
Congrats on both med school & dance team & good luck girly!!

Extracirruculars also play a big part in getting into med school not just grades, volunteer work, and mcat scores. If you aren't involved enough in campus activities they can use that against you. I say stick with dancing and start looking for volunteer opportunities for the summer and when you aren't dancing.
I'm totally biased because I coach a dance team...and I know how hard it is to find good dancers. BUT, I also tell my girls that their education has to come first. I don't know anything about the medical field or how hard it is to find internships, but if you think another opportunity won't come around, you should take this one.
