sizing Q gap v. target/walmart

OK, I have to buy my sister's birthday present today at lunch and the only store I can get to is GAP. I was planning on getting her a purse or something (she's 15) but Mom just said that she really wants clothes, but doesn't know what size she wears. She wears a 12/14/XL at Target and Walmart (the only places Mom isn't too cheap to shop at, but that another story...)- what size do you think she'd be at GAP? I don't want to offend her by getting something huge, and GAP usually runs big so I was thinking like an 8/M?

ETA: Also, I don't believe for a second that she wears those sizes...maybe they "fit" her, but they certainly don't fit her well....put it this way, Mom once asked if she thought my bathing suit was a bit tight.

The Gap tops run huge, so I think she'd be ok with a M.  As far as pants, you may want to go with a 10.  do you know what brand she usually wears at Target?  I know that Mossimo runs small (I have to go up from my normal size), so if she wears a 12 in Mossimo she's probably a 10 at the Gap.

I'd go with 10 on bottoms and large on tops

I'd say M is a safe bet in the Gap, it would come out to an 8-10, which sounds like your sister's real size (unless she has a large chest, then I'd say L). My mom did that wear cheap baggy clothes thing too...hence me wearing size L in EVERYTHING I owned back in HS despite being much smaller than that.

Thanks everyone! I went and got her a M top (its a wrap style though and can be tied looser if she needs to, plus it looked pretty big), and a purse- and both were on sale! (actually, now I feel a bit cheap casue they rang up lower then they were marked- the shirt was $4!!)
