Do any of you have one of these and think they are a worthy investment?
I have been sick almost every 3 weeks this winter. I'm pretty sure its the dust and lack of air circulation in my tiny room. I know I have to dust, but other than that, any tips? I have never been sick this often- I am fairly hardy and take my vitamins, sleep, don't drink much, etc
Anyway, DH and I bought an air purifier about a year ago when we had my brother-in-law's cat staying at our house for a few weeks. Before the air purifier whenever the cat would stay with us, we'd have itchy eyes, be sneezing constantly, congested, etc, etc. We just got done having the cat with us for three full weeks and neither one of us had a single allergic episode. No itchy eyes, no sneezing, no congestion, nothing. We only run the air purifier at night, but it cuts down on the total amount of allergens in the house, so it's benefits are felt throughout the day.
I don't know if it causes either of us to be sick less (I have no way of knowing that), but I think it's a worthwhile investment. We run it every night and actually enjoy the white noise that it produces. I figure if you're going to spend eight hours a day in a room, that room should at least have clean air.
Apartment Therapy has written a lot about the subject of air filters. I'd go to their site and type in "air filters" into their search menu. and you should get a lot of info.
FWIW, we got our air filter at Bed Bath and Beyond and used one of the ubiquitous 20% off coupons, so that helped. Be prepared to spend in the $150 ish range. And I'd also recommend looking at some reviews on Amazon. From what I've read, the silent ionic air purifiers are a bunch of bull.
I love my air purifier. It's an old one, purchased in 2000. What sucks about mine is replacing the filters because they cost over $60. But when it's got a clean filter, the air IS noticably cleaner in the bedroom where I keep it.

I sleep like a baby with mine - I love it. I purchased mine a few years ago at a going out of business sale at Robinsons May. It was a ridiculously low price so we decieded to try it out. We liked it so much we went back and purchased a second one for our guest room!
