Insuring jewelry
Permalink Closed

I've added some more jewelry to my collection recently and really need to look into insurance options.  Has anyone here purchased a separate jewelry policy or do you just have it covered under your homeowners insurance?  I currently have Liberty Mutual for my home insurance and it looks like I would have to add additional coverage for the jewelry.

My engagement ring is insured separately from our renters insurance. Basically, you have to get a quote from a jeweler stating the value -- the quote is usually very detailed and has photographs, etc. Then you submit that to insurance company for coverage.

Kitty, did you go through the same company that you have for renters insurance or to a company that specializes in jewelry insurance? I'm getting a full appraisal for the piece that I bought this weekend since it is antique. For everything else I just have the receipts and I have to take photos. I wonder if that's enough.

Yeah, the same insurance company. They should give you a deal (usually like 10% off or something) if you have other insurance policies with them.

You should give them a call and see what they recommend. It might make more sense to just insure it under your homeowners. They'll tell you what you need in terms of documents, too.

I got a jewelry rider like Kitty. Basically I called them up and said I wanted to insure my engagement ring separately because I didn't think the coverage under the renter's insurance would be enough for everything I have. I had to fill out a form and fax it back and then have the jewelry store send an appraisal slip - my receipt wasn't enough because it wasn't as descriptive as they wanted.

Oh, this is good info to know as we'll be upgrading my ring this fall for our 10 yr anniversary. I never would've thought about insuring it (my ring now is no where near worthy of insurance) but the new one will definitely need it!

I have LM for my Homeowners - I belive mine covers individual pieces under $1000 but anything over that needs a rider.

Holy crap. I have actually heard of this happening to several people and it really stresses/worries me. Even more than the $$ is the sentimental value.

Trust me , I cried like a baby. My husband picked the stone out and then designed the setting to match it, it was very upsetting.

I have a separate policy that covers my e-ring, wedding band, and a few other pieces. It is definitely worth it in my opinion bc it's not that expensive and would defintinitely be worth it if I ever lost it or it was stolen. It takes awhile before you would 'lose' money on the policy. Essentially it would its such a cheap premium that it would take 80 years or something like that before I hit the amount I have them insured at. You do want to get it reappraised every few years though and have your policy updated.

I recently lost a necklace my FI gave to me for Christmas. We didn't have it insured bc we didn't think it was worth it. Although I was sad about they money that we lost I was more upset about the sentimental value the necklace had and it was so pretty! =( I can't imagine losing my e ring or wedding band.

My mom had her center stone fall out while doing laundry one time. She didn't notice until after the water had spun out and the diamond was down the drain. She cried forever because it was the same one he had proposed with and held so much sentimental value.

I've lost both of my side stones already and it was frustrating. I can't imagine losing the center stone.

Hi!
my husband is an insurance agent, so he tells me that under a regular home owners insurance you have jewerly coverage limit up to $1,000.00 for jewerly. You can add items to the policy by scheduling them for special coverage or you can purchase a personal articles floater. If you have more questions - let me know. We're in LA, CA.
