what to expect at a bikini wax?
Permalink Closed

One of my New Year's resolutions was to get professional bikini waxes, I'm done with doing it myself!  However for some reason I'm a little wary of making an appointment, I think it's because I don't know what to expect.  For those of you who do go to a spa, how uncomfortable do you find it?  How long do you go between appointments?  If you've done home waxing and at a spa, what are the major differences in the end result?

TIA!

I've gone once to a salon for a bikini wax. It was a little embarrassing for me to call and schedule the appointment only because it was my first time and a guy answered the phone.

When I got there it wasn't all that bad. It didn't hurt as much as I thought it would but maybe that was because I was pretty hungover and felt terrible overall. One thing I found was that I still had ingrowns which I didn't think I would and it didn't last all that long - a few weeks not the month I was expecting.

I never went back because I figured if it wasn't going to last that long and I was still going to get the nasty red ingrown bumps I might as well save the money and shave myself. Maybe I just need to try a better place.

Have you heard of sugaring? The girls on the Knot talk about it but I don't know much about it.

I had my first brazillian and I was so nervous. I've had regular bikini waxes before but I was terrified to get the brazillian. It wasn't that bad.

Spas are always professional so no need to feel embarrassed. My spa I go to, you wear your undies and she moves them out of the way as she needs to. You cover up with a little terrycloth "skirt" thing. She makes small talk and its not uncomfortable at all.

I can go about 6 weeks to 2 months between waxes. I can't say between home and spa becuase home wax kills me, I find it sooo painful I can't do it myself.

Good luck, it will be no problem, I'm sure!

It's not that bad! I do recommend taking an ibprofben before going your first time (I do everytime!). It helps a little with pain, but also with any swelling or redness you might get.

Aurora- I use to get sugared and loved it! When I moved after college I couldn't find anyone in the new area to do it. It's about the same as waxing, but I find it to be slightly less painful. Its just a ball of wax that she rolls down then rips up. She then rolls it and keeps going. Sounds kinda gross, but it works really well!

honestly a Brazilian is really not embarrassing at all. They only expose the area they are waxing , and usually makes small talk while there doing it. I go to a girl who does a great quick Brazilian wax - done in usually 15 min!

I am pretty used to bikini waxes, and I find they are not unconfortable at all (I am talking about brazilians - never had it done). I get to keep my undies (usually wear "skimpy" ones), and the girl is a professional, so it is not embarassing at all!

It doesn't hurt much, but the first "stroke" can be painful.
I warmly reccommend it, love the results and how long they last.

I've had a bunch of waxes at different places. Most important would be to find ones in your area with good reviews, regardless of price. I've found that places that were cheaper tend to be judgemental ("ITS BEEN A WHILE HUH") or pushy and sometimes do a quick job, then you get home and find patches left behind.

I find it always painful but in a 3 seconds max kinda way (brazillian that is). It is normal to be embarrassed but they see that stuff all day, its nothing for them.

I used to use the Surgi Wax brazillian kit at home, it was decent but hard to get into every nook and cranny. I switched to professional and while easier, I was surprised that I was still getting ingrowns and it was annoying spending all that money then having a big spot ruin the whole effect..

Good luck, you'll be fine.
