i think watching those cute twins on DH got me thinking...


so the situation is that my bf's mom is a twin and his dad is a twin.  if i remember correctly, doesn't it skip a generation and come from the man's side of the family?  so if that is the case, wouldn't we have an increased chance of having twins?  just wondering.

My dad is a twin, so I have read about if that would raise my chances of having twins...

I read that non-identical twins run in families, but that it is more likely to happen if it is on the mother's side. So... I guess I am in the clear, but if your bf's mom is a non-identical twin then you may get your own cute twins!!

non-identical!!  hmmm.  interesting.  i know i am young, but i have been saving $17 a day (10 for my retirement, $7 for my kids college education)  and i think i'm gonna have to save $24 a day!  no, i think i'll make the bf.  it is his fault anyway!!!

Fraternal twins run in the mothers family b/c it has to do with the woman releasing more than one egg at a time - the man has nothing to do with it.  As far as I know, they don't know what causes identical twins but one would think that if either of your families has a history of twins then you would have a slightly higher-than-average chance?

my uncles are supposedly identical twins & i know the theory is that only fraternals are inherited, but i'm convinced my uncles ARE fraternal.  one is slightly taller than the other & there are just certain things that make them different.  (the look completely different to me cuz on is heavier than the other & one is darker skinned than the other, but i know these things have nothing to do w/ them being fraternal or not)  anyone know how to tell if twins truly are identical?  i heard once that one of them is left handed & one is right handed for true identicals.  is this true?

Well in my family we have identical twins that run through our gene pool and its on my mom's side.  My grandma had twin siblings, she had twin daughters, one of the twins had twin sons and one of my grandma's brother's had twins.  I'm praying that one of my twin cousins will get the gene and not me!! they are all identical too. I still can't tell my twin cousins apart and they've been around for 11 years!

Do they have the exact DNA? Then if not they are fraternal.

My bf's dad is a twin and my bf has cousins who are twins, so I guess they run in the family (they are all fraternal twins).  So who knows what will happen.

hmm, i think i asked my grandma & she said they had been tested, but this was like 40 years ago... did they even do DNA tests back then???  well, it's not like they are gonna do one just to satisfy me so i may never know.

hee--nylabelle--my old b-f and i used to discuss this.  he is a twin and his mother is a twin, and my dad is a twin and my mom has brothers who are twins.  we decided that we could only ever procreate once, because we had such a high incidence of twins on both sides that they would certainly only come out in matched pairs.
