hair dresser problems-- long

I have a friend whose natural hair color is the same as mine - medium brown.  About 5 years ago she started getting a little golden brown put in her hair, then she started gettting it reddish-brown.  She kept it like that for probably 3 years.  Then recently she got is dyed RED.  It is the most beautiful shade of red I have ever seen in my life (think Debra Messing).  It was noticeable, but not shocking since she had been wearing a reddish tint anyway.  Anyway, I go back and forth between highlights and the color of my natural color.   I have been thinking that I want to do the same thing.  I want to slowly go red.  We use the same hairdresser, so I talked to the hairdresser about it.  I asked her about getting some subtle red highlights, but she said she they would not show up (now I know I have seen people with red highlights before confused.gif but I didn't argue with her).  I told her that my goal was to get my hair like my friend's hair, but to go slowly like she did.  She told me that she WOULD NOT do my hair like my friend's because I would hate it.  WHAT!! How does she know if I would hate it?  Now, if I went from what I have now to what my friend has I probably would, but I wanted to do it slowly.   I hate confrontations so I just let her trim my split ends and left.

The problem is I have been going to this stylist for a very long time.  However, I am thinking about changing hairdressers,  but  I am afraid to change hairdressers.  I almost would like to add red highlights myself, but the idea of doing red myself scares me.  I have done my own color before, but never red.  What do you girls think I should do?

I'd ask her why she thinks you would hate it. Maybe she thinks you don't have the right skin tone for it, or something like that? If it is something like that, I might trust her professional opinion and experience, but I think it's weird that she didn't give an explanation.

If she won't give you an explanation, then go to someone else at a different salon and ask for the same thing. You can always come back to your current stylist if you want, and if she says anything, just say you had a big day, needed an emergency cut on short notice and she was totally booked, and when you went to the other salon and mentioned wanting to go red, the other person said you could try it. Even if she totally sees through your lie, it lets you both save face and not have to actually talk about it - since you're afraid of confrontation.

I wouldn't give yourself red highlights. First of all, at least personally I think trying to do highlights yourself is pretty hard. It looks easy in the commercials, but I tried it once a couple years ago and I washed all the dye off after just a minute because I had no idea where to put the highlights, or how thick to make them, and I was afraid I'd look dumb. Also, red is a really tricky color - it either really sticks with you and won't leave, or it will wash out right away. Of all the colors, I think red is something best left to a professional.

I get where you are coming from.  I have been through more hairdressers than anyone I know.  Do you remember ever saying anything negative about red hair?  If so, that may be what she is remembering.  If not, I would do like tara says and ask her why she thinks you will hate it. My hair has been about every color under the rainbow over the past 6 or 7 years, except red.  I love red but I am just not brave enough.  I do know people who change their hair color alot so I would imagine you could slowly go to red.  Maybe you could try a reddish brown and then later on go more red.  Just keep in mind that changing you hair color requires that the whole head be dyed and that can be very damaging if done too much.  I know from experience it is better to stick with one hair color for awhile instead of changing too much because you end up having to get it cut off.  Now if your hair is short, then it works better because you are constantly getting it trimmed.

ITA.  Maybe she sees something that you don't.  Is your other friend a loyal client as well? Maybe she was trying to deter you so as to not upset your friend?  I know that if I finally rolled out a beautiful head of red hair and was getting lots of attention, I wouldn't want my stylist giving away the same look.

Ditto to the above two. Also, if you want to try it yourself, Natural Instincts makes some great reddish tints. I wouldn't recommend using anything of theirs that is a direct red, because it always looks cheap and purplish, but the red-brown versions are good.

Red is super tricky, though, and I've seen it done very poorly more than I've seen it done well. Unfortunately your stylist may know something you don't. But definitely get more information.
