I really like Trunk tees, unfortunately they are expensive...

These are cool from Virgin Threads...

I love this from Girlshop...

Also, I don't usually like to buy tee shirts from Urban cause soon everyone and their mom has it, but I think these are cool...

Pink Spike tees are really nice and different, at www.pinkspike.com or www.sunwalters.com (bonus Sun Walters has a 30% off code).

Take a look at www.virginthreads.com, there are usually tons of t-shirts that are more unique there.

And if your friend is a dorky smartass like me, I like French Connection too and they're not overexposed if you're in a smaller city.

EDIT: I adore this shirt...do you think anyone would notice if I wore this around LA? It would satiate the native New Yorker in me.

I love ihotto.com for cute t-shirts.  Not terribly great quality, but they hold up similarly to something from Old Navy.  Other than that I have nothing but good things to say about them; they are cute, cheap, free shipping over $20 (maybe $25?), arrive promptly in cute wrapping paper, etc.  Here are some of my favorites (sorry for humongous pictures):

Try www.threadless.com, www.heavytees.com and www.jargol.com. The first two are T-shirt websites and the third one is a shopping website that features T-shirts a lot. They find them from all sorts of small places (too many to list).
