gas stove repair

this is extremely random, but maybe someone will have an experience they can share...

my old stove/range in my apt. is broken, and the landlords won't fix it (i know i know, please don't write "they should get it fixed for you").  the burners on the top work fine, but the thermostat in the oven part is broken--ie. i set the oven for 350 or something, and it doesn't stop at the specified temp--it just keeps heating until it gets all the way up to like 700 degrees.  obviously, i can't really bake or anything because it's so unpredictable.

does anyone know how expensive a broken thermostat is to fix? i am wondering if it would be cheaper to do that or just buy a whole new stove (probably somewhere around $300).  help.

Here's something I found on Ask Jeeves:

3. Oven cooks at higher temperature than set for

a. Calibrate thermostat

$68 - 90

b. Defective thermostat

$130 - 200

c. Defective selector switch

$122 - 162

d. Defective bake/broil switch

$167 - 222

Sears also has a feature on their site that can give you a free estimate on repair costs.  HTH!

ooh! thank you so much, lmonet--it never occurred to me to look at sears.  do you think they hire out for repairs even for stuff that didn't come from their store?

Of course!  They fix just about anything, regardless of brand.

i called on sat. and the lady explained that they don't service the brand of stove i have (gaffers & sattler).  i am so annoyed by all of this.  who rents an apartment out without a working stove?

i did a little testing of my stove while i was home studying last night.  it seems to actually do fine at getting to the correct temp as long as i set it below 400.  if i set it any higher, that's when it doesn't shut off and keeps climbing to like 600.  so anyway, i'm going to hold off on doing anything with it for now--as long as i can bake things at 350, i should be ok for the basics.

i also found someone who can fix it, though--turns out there is a whole culture of vintage appliance enthusiasts who live for this mid-century stuff.  i talked to this guy on the phone last night who offered to "haul the stove away" for me if i decided to get a new one.  um, thanks dude, i think i can sell it myself instead of giving it to you.
