HELP: anyone with b cancer experience?
Permalink Closed

Hi, everyone. I am trying not to freak out at work right now. So my mom had her reg. mamogram a few weeks ago, and they found a small lump. Last wed. she had it biopsied; friday night they called her a told her it was cancerous. My dad & sis were in NY on a trip, and she didn't want to "ruin" their trip, so she didn't tell them until they got home on sunday. I have been insanely sick, so I couldn't go see her this weekend. I just wanted to give her a frickin hug, but I didn't want to make her sick. So she had to sit at home by herself this weekend; I talked to her most of the time on the phone, but it's not the same. So she & my dad went to the doc this morning. The doc told her that it's small and only in stage 1. BUT I guess there are 2 types (invasive & non-invasive) and hers is both? My dad said it was more invasive than not, and that's bad. I don't really know anything about this; I'm really scared and I just want to go see her but I'm still sick. The doc said that they're going to remove the lump and do some radiation among other things. I know that this type of thing is (unfortunately) kind of common in women, but the only other time I dealt with someone I know having cancer was with my grandma (who died when I was 12, so I don't remember much about it). Does anyone know more about this subject who can explain some things to me? Any advice? Thanks.

I am so sorry for your family and your Mom.

I don't know much about this, but will share what I do know. I have two friends who went through this - both in further stages than your Mom (2 and 3, I think). They both experienced both the lumpectomy and then chemotherapy and then radiation. The radiation is usually for "good measure" to make sure it is gone, so if that is all they are recommending for your Mom (i.e. no chemo) then I think that is a good sign. I don't know much about the invasive/noninvasive aspect, but would recommend going to the American Cancer Society website - they have  a ton of wonderful information for families, and I would also not be afraid to ask lots of questions. My father died very young from acute leukemia a few years ago, and asking questions was what kept me and my family from losing hope and helped us all make informed decisions about his treatment. Both of my friends who faced breast cancer are healthy and happy a year and three years later, so stay strong and optimistic, but don't be afraid to acknowledge that you're scared! That's my best advice. Take care!

Katya - I have had some experience with breast cancer.  My grandmother had breast cancer.  She sucessfully had the tumor removed and lived for 14 years after her cancer experience.  I also work for a cancer research company - we have had many breast cancer trials.  So if you want to PM me, I will be happy to talk to you.

Also, keep in mind that stage I cancer is very very treatable.

One of my aunts had this a few years ago and she went ahead and had both breasts removed and under went the treatment options the doctor suggested (not sure what) and she is doing fine now. Breast cancer is one of the 5 cancers they have a treatment for/cure so that is good for you and your mom.  Also since they got her when she was in stage 1 (the worst is stage 4) that is a good sign too.  There is a much higher cure rate at the lower stages.

Its ok to be upset and scared.  Just remember the best thing is to be knowledgeable about it and stay positive.

thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, everyone who has responded so quickly. I really do feel better already. I will keep you all informed on what happens. I think I should just calm down and focus on keeping my mom's attitude (and mine) postive. Thanks again.

katya - I am so sorry your family is going through this! If it helps, two of my grandmothers had bc and both lived 30+ years after recovering (and they were treated in the 60s!). My prayers are with you.
