Warning...sad story inside
Permalink Closed

My mom went out to dinner last night at around 6:30. When she and my sister got back at 11, they couldn't find their dog (a Weimeraner) anywhere. They thought she was missing, searched the neighborhood, etc.

A few hours later, my mom went to bed. When she pulled off all the pillows on her bed (she has tons on her headboard), she found the dog behind it, dead. I guess she crawled back there to die.

She was 6 years old, no health problems whatsoever. She'd just been to the vet for her checkup -- her weight, etc was fine. She was eating/excreting normally and hadn't been acting any differently. There was no blood or injury, no indication that she'd eaten something poisonous, etc.

My mom is heartbroken...the dog was her buddy and seemed like it was perfectly healthy. Has anyone ever heard of something like this before? I've seen it happen in elderly dogs, but never in younger ones. Does anyone know if Weimeraners are prone to something like this? She is just so sad and confused.

RIP Molly...

Can a vet tell your mom what happened?

I'm so sorry for you and your mom and sister. THe best answer I can offer is to take Molly to your vet and have them do an autopsy. Unfortunately, since they tend to be closed on the weekends, you probably need to keep her body cold. That may mean bagging her and keeping her outside in the cold. I'm so sorry to be kinda graphic, not meaning to sound callous, that's just the reality. I used to work at an animal hospital, so I had to do these things...

I'm so sorry for your mom and your family's loss. I agree with what was said about the autopsy; that's really the only way to tell. My dog had puppies 2 years ago, and our good friend took one and so did his sister. When they were about 7 months old, the sister's puppy (who was very well taken care of & very "healthy") died overnight. She just woke up in the morning, and her puppy was gone; she had no idea why. The pup was acting sompletely normal the night before. They took her in for an autopsy, and found that a tumor had begun to grow in her head, and because she was still so small, it killed her very quickly from the pressure on her brain. It's never easy to lose a friend, no matter how long she/he has been with you. This may not be what your mom or sis wants to hear, but sometimes the only cure for this kind of heartbreak (after some mourning time) is a new puppy. Not that you can ever replace your old friend, but it definately helps. Give your mom & sister (and yourself) some hugs from us all!

I'm so sorry for your family. I REALLY love animals, like more than the average person and my heart just breaks hearing this.  Dogs do hide when they are sick or when they know they are going to die.  Before we had to put my dog to sleep due to cancer, she would always hide under the bed or in the back of closets.  It's very sad, and I'm very sorry.

thanks everyone, for your kind thoughts & words.

My mom didn't really even think about an autopsy...my stepdad was at work when this happened (he's a firefighter), so she had to move Molly outside for the night. She said she was so sad to just leave her there. My stepdad came home early & took the dog to the animal hospital..I guess they never even thought about an autopsy.

My mom is beating herself up big time; she feels like she missed something she should have seen. She also has two ancient little dogs (Lhasas) and she would have been prepared if it had been one of them, but she never expected Molly.

Tara t- let me know if you find anything out.

I am very sorry to hear this Halleybird. I put off reading the post because when I opened it and saw the picture of the gorgeous puppy I knew I wasn't ready to read it.

I have heard they are prone to have some heart problmes, but I don't know if they are fatal. My aunt has a Weimaraners and she sent me this link. Weimaraner Club of America.
