Quite a few of us came to the consensus that we were having issues looking 'cute' in a recent thread, and contemplating what to do to get a little sexiness/edge into our look.  I'm having a little trouble finding edgier things to incorporate into my look, I'm not sure about the rest of you!  Everything seems a little too biker, or a little too butch, or a little too ... something.

So, here we can post cool things we've found, or sites to browse.  There must be some less maintstream places to find stuff like this, no?  Like those screw earrings someone posted a few weeks ago ......

Anyone?

I think etsy is good for unique jewelry.

Other than accessories, I don't focus as much on injecting "edge" into my style and I do focus on not letting too much "cute" get in.

Good idea - I have been trying to be less cute lately too.  Here's what I like:

accessories-gifts_header.jpgaccessories-gifts_header.jpgaccessories-gifts_header.jpg

1754038_100.jpg

Layered necklaces and bracelets in dark colors

I am almost exclusively wearing "you don't know jacques" from OPI (a dark dark burgundy) on my nails.

I love eyeliner during the day and smokey eyes at night

I don't know why, but I think slouchy boyfriend tees in a super soft, almost worn cotton are sexy

I have a lot of dominatrix shoes too smile.gif

Also, I love using hair powder to make my hair "dirty" and pulling it into a messy bun.

I mix all this in with pencil skirts and blouses for work and jeans on the weekends.

So i guess this isn't much about where to find things but the look I'm going for...

JJ, what hair powder do you use? I have fine hair that gets oily easily and would love to have some powder on hand for just general use.

I don't know about edgy...I get told I look "cute" sometimes, but mostly I go for a look of casual elegance. For me this means:

- heels, always heels. I love them and live / work in them. Stilettos, platforms, wedges, you name it. I do find that some shoes are too "cutesy" for me though - I don't do a lot of bows or doodads on my shoes. I like color, embroidery, embossed velvet, suede.

- jeans that have a casual (but still can be dressy), kind of 70's vibe. I like a mid-rise with a flare leg. Or a straight leg or boot cut. I am too curvy for skinny jeans.

- Because I am curvy, and have T&A, I try to wear formfitting tops. But again, I don't go for cute-style tops...more drapey elegance for these. I wear a lot of v-necks and sort of scoop-y, draped neck tops.

- I always go for jewelry as my showpieces in my clothing - funky necklaces, wild chandelier earrings, a big cuff or bangles, a big ol' cocktail ring. I love statement jewelry and wear it all the time.

- I don't do small bags unless it's for a night out and then I go totally small with a clutch. Otherwise it's a somewhat oversized hobo or shoulder bag, with a semi-boho flair.

- Hair is often up or partially pinned up. I have such straight, fine hair that it's hard to give it volume, so I fake it with a partial updo and let the rest hang down, kind of messy.

- I never can get lipstick/gloss/stain to stay, so I focus on eyes. I don't look good with a true smoky eye, but I can carry some thick liner and I always double- or triple-coat mascara.

I think I project sexy more than edgy...at least that's what DH says, though I guess he's hardly unbiased. But I try to only wear things that I *feel* sexy in...even if that doesn't mean ta-ta's bustin' out or short skirts...it's more a state of mind. I feel extra confident when I feel like I look semi-dressy but not like I tried to hard - even if I spent 3 hours figuring out just the right outfit. :)

I don't think there are specific sites so much as specific things that jump out at me -

- Black, black, black - never navy and almost never brown.
- White - never cream/ivory and never beige or tan.
- Black and white prints, just about any kind, and animal prints.
- Silver, almost never gold.
- Shoes with hardware, at least some kind of buckle, and belts with grommets.
- No crewnecks, no polo collars, nothing that could be regarded as unisex or preppy.
- Hoop earrings, if I wear any at all.
- Dark-framed glasses, somewhat retro.
- Bracelets and interesting watches - I seem to always have my wrists adorned.

Since the 80s my style has been mostly punk, but considering my age and lifestyle, I dial it way back. If someone isn't familiar with a punk aesthetic, they won't generally recognize the influences. For example, a while ago I wore a black/white print pencil skirt, black round-toed mary jane pumps, and an olive beater tank under a black cardigan. My FIL told me I looked like a Republican, but someone else might have read it as rockabilly.

I guess I'm looking to incorporate some tougher pieces into my current look, as opposed to going for a edgier look altogether.  Does that make sense?  I mean, I like my feminine tops and my cardigans and my trouser jeans!  I just want to through some stuff in there to mix it up a bit, and give it a little more attitude.  To make it a little harder to 'peg' me at first glance than it seems to be now ... because I don't currently seem to be projecting my inner hard-ass, and I want to wear that hard-ass on my sleeve a bit.  I tend to be into eclectic mixes of styles, so I think it could be cool - very leather & lace, you know?

That last bracelet is hot, Kitty!

This is what came up when I typed 'edgy' into etsy ....

This is me too - love the bracelets, btw.  I'm living in pencil skirts too and jeans for weekends.  Luv the sheer boyfriend tees - so does my DH.  I've been wearng that color a lot too for nails, but find I really like silver/grey too - 'cause it's different.  Not in the mood for flouncy skirts or dresses.  Mixing in a lot of grey and some white or cream in the mix in small amounts
