Bad Luck only comes in rounds of three, right?
Permalink Closed

I have really been having a round of bad luck lately...

Horrible trip overseas, sickness, etc.

The latest--three of the eight windows in my car were busted out.

I live in a midrise in midtown Atlanta.  It is a "luxury-coded" building with an attached, controlled-access parking garage with guards and courtesy officers, closed-circuit television, etc.  Stupid me, always felt fairly "safe" in this garage.

This morning, I go out to my car to go to work and BAM! three of my windows are covered by plastic garbage bags.  On my front seat is a letter from a cop that has a report number and contact number and asks that I call him.  After doing so, I realize that these "hoodlums" had vandalized 16 cars in my garage in 6 minutes.  They have them on video entering the garage a few minutes after midnight and leaving just six minutes later.

Anyway, these stupid thugs broke out three of my windows and what do they take...they take...drumroll please...my employee badge.  That is the only thing they took from my Jeep.  Now, obviously they are trying to tell me my taste in music bites the big one.  I'm offended that the thiefs didn't want my CDs!  Seriously, they threw everything in my console into the backseat, and they didn't take $17 in cash.  They threw it from the console to the back seat.  They also didn't take a $200 check.  BUT they took my employee badge!

Luckily, my badge didn't have my pic on it and it didn't have my name or any details about my company on it.  It is just a 2.5x4 inch white plastic card with an info strip on it.

The cops were very nice.  Gave me a good rec for a glass person who is coming tomorrow to fix the windows.  They also taped up the windows which is a good thing since it stormed last night and my car would've been a mess otherwise (this happened Sunday night, but I worked from home yesterday, so didn't find it until this morning).  Anyway, they have also apprehended the suspects.  Because I was able to positively "ID" my ID badge, my case will be included in their felony charges against the group of 4 hoodlums.  It appears they went down the street to another garage and were caught.  One mercedes convertible in the garage had the cloth top sliced with knifes.  A volvo convertible had the sides dented with a crowbar, so all-in-all, I feel pretty lucky that I just have to replace a couple of windows (no body damage, etc.).

I also feel really lucky, because I left my car and went inside a little over 10 minutes before all of this happened.  Even more scary is the fact that I had left my driver's license, debit card and a credit card in the cup holder and ran back down to get it...all about 10 minutes before this happened.

I was thinking as I got ready this morning that I should move...I think this was a sign from a higher power telling me to go!

Whoa. That's awful!! You'd think with all that security, something like that wouldn't happen.

Glad you're ok physically though! They could have easily decided to do it a few minutes earlier.

Hope things work out and get better!

A similar thing happened to my bf a couple of years ago.  He had the back window of his car smashed in and all they took was the change out of the console.  Stupid inner city idiots...

I'm glad that you are okay and that the police were nice about it.  I am also glad that from the sound of it, justice will prevail for all of the people that had their cars vandalized (especially you).

Oh jah, I'm so sorry!  I've had cars vandalized and stolen - not here, but in Phoenix - and it's never fun to deal with the police, the insurance, etc.  I'm glad you weren't hurt or anything though, and hey - at least you don't have to replace your CD's (usually that's not covered by insurance).

Where are you thinking of moving to?  You know, Roswell was cited in the paper last fall as one of the 20 safest cities in the East...and it's not far from work ~gentle teasing~

I hope nothing else happens to you in Midtown - I've not heard of a lot of crime there...more reports from Buckhead than anything else.  Just stay alert and be safe...
