I am considering some mason pearson brushes.  I have very fine highlighted long curly hair, and a lot of it.  I must have the most tangly hair on the face of the earth.  Combing through my hair wet with conditioner/dry is torture!!  cry

Anyway my stylist told me I should brush my hair more often to help tangles.  Brushing makes my hair a big ball of frizz.  He suggested a nylon/boar paddle brush.  I've heard Mason Pearsons are good.  I'm considering the "MP Junior boar/nylon" one.  Also thinking about getting the "MP handy detangler" brush.  Anyone have any experience with these??

How do they compare to Marilyn brushes?

Thanks for your help!!

I'm surprised to hear that a stylist said to brush your curly hair.  Is it really curly?  It seems that keeping your hair trimmed, conditioned, and finger-styling with a curl creme would keep tangles at bay.

I guess if you wear your hair in a blown-out style, then having a good round brush or two is useful.

I have the red ceramic one that Ulta sells, and I really like it.  I think it is made by Marilyn (or owned by the Marilyn company).  For blowouts, it works really well.  I would expect the same from the Marilyn Tuxedo brush (which I think of as the "original" Marilyn brush).

I have had no experience with the MP brushes, but the magazines seem to love them.  A paddle brush is good for a final smoothing of hair but probably not the best for styling.  I don't think it really holds heat.

I attached a photo of the type of brush I use.  I'm actually planning on going to Ulta to get another one (smaller than the one I have).

I have a Mason Pearson brush, and I don't think they're worth the money. In fact, I hardly ever use mine. I also have curly hair that gets very tangled, and I just use detangler and a paddle brush (which I guess is not the best). I start towards the bottom and work my way up.

I have super thick, curly hair and brushing it with ANY brush makes my hair look like an effin rat's nest! If you find one that does work, please post a review! I'd like to be able to smooth out my curls without that happening.

My stylist told me the Umberto brushes at Target are comparable to Mason Pearson brushes and they're a fraction of the cost! Aoubt $10-15. They're the boar combo and work great! I have curly hair too (that I blow out straight.)

So I purchased a few of the MP brushes and they are definitly not worth the money.  I bought a purology brush for $10 that I like more then the $90 MP's.  Anyway I give up.  I think I am ready to accept that I will always have a rats nest when I brush curls out.  Also, my tangles are at their very worst since getting highlights.  I honestly think I have at this point ripped most of the highlights out while trying to brush out tangles.  If anyone knows of any incredible detanglers I would love love to hear about it.

Thanks KMD!!.  I think I'm going to give this salon a shot!  I never knew "curl specialists" existed.  Have you tried their salon/products before??

hey-i just wanted to put in my two cents about ouidad...i think i have posted on here before about how amazing ouidad products are as well as the "carving and slicing" cut she does. i have been using them for over 5 years now and i will never try anything else. i get the cut about every 6-9 months and i use the climate control gel for my frizzy curls and it's the best. (and believe me, i have tried almost everything...) pm me if you need any more info-hth!
