I know this sounds a bit simplistic, but I would suggest going to the mattress store (doesn't have to be where you actually buy from) and just hanging out there for an afternoon. I don't know your particular situation, but I bought a new mattress about a year and a half ago. This was the first brand new mattress and I had no idea what style I wanted. All the choices were so mind-boggling, especially to someone who had been sleeping on used mattresses her whole life! Like, shocker, mattresses don't come with a divot in the middle!
Anyway, I actually took a magazine to the store and just spend some time on each one. I didn't just sit down and get right back up, I really spent some time with each one.
Personally, I really disliked the foam mattresses. They just felt weird. I can't describe the actual feeling, but the foam didn't seem to support me enough.

We just got a tempurpedic - it is wonderful, fabulous, comfortable, warm and I love it. We got free pillows too . The tempurpedic gives wonderful support - we have the mattress on a wood platform. Whatever your decision, enjoy your new mattress.
If I were in the market for a mattress, which I will be soon, I would check the eco options. The chemicals and allergens and random crap in conventional mattresses are rather frightening.
Definitely Tempurpedic! A little weird to sleep on for about 2 days, but after that.......... ahhhhhhhh!
Agreed! We actually got one with a quilted top over the memory foam, which helps with softness obviously but also with support I think. We've had it for 2 years and I looooooove it. Now sleeping on a spring mattress feels weird!

You have to do the actual Tempurpedic, though. We bought an imitation at first that was "just as good as Tempurpedic." Yeah, right! It sucked so much, not to mention that it smelled really funny. No comparison to the real deal. Not sure about the memory foam mattress toppers, but I can't imagine that it would be as good as the actual Tempurpedic.
Don't like the pillows, though. A little too hard for me.
I have had a Tempurpedic for like 3 years, worth every freakin' penny! The imitations do not compare, as I tried those out, too. I really love my mattress!
