Hairstyle questions (color recs?)
Permalink Closed

My hair is in a weird growing out stage right now that is killing me. It was a chin length layered bob when I had it cut last Memorial Day weekend . It's dreadfully boring and I desperately need to add some kind of shape and style to my hair.

I know I have to get my layers done again, and my stylist cuts them well so they hang pretty decently for grown-out layers, but I was wondering about two things...

1. Can I ever get sorta messy straight-down bangs (a la Ashlee Simpson)? Yes or no? I have a round face and chubby cheeks. BF already likes to make comparisons to Hilary Duff (which I could stand to live without...) and I'm afraid they'll make me look like I'm 12. But at the same time, it would be an easy way to punch up my hair

2. Should I color my hair? My hair is virgin (pretty much the color in the pictures) and has never been dyed in my life, but I get these days when I feel like my hair is so common and blah. I really want red or brown highlights but still toned down enough so that my co-workers don't think I've gone mad.

(oh and i'm wearing my sex is like snow t-shirt! d-o-r-k-arific I know )

A) You could definitly pull of shaggy bangs. I would recommend keeping them long and very choppy and very straight (your hair looks pretty straight in the pic) and kind of push them to the sides. Bangs are a really great way to punch up your look, and if you don't like them, they are easy to grow out.

B) If you want to do something with red dye, I can assure you, red is VERY hard to keep up. It fades SO fast.

C) You are adorable! Your skin looks so beautiful and creamy. I am totally jealous.

I agree everything Amelie said.

My hair is super straight and I got my haircut like Ashlee Simpsons. It is really great because if I don't feel like doing anything w/ it I can scruntch it and put a curling product in my hair and it comes out kind of wavy. It also looks cute if I put it in a pony tail.

My hair is dyed really dark bronw w/ red in it. The red is major matinence so just be prepared. I am going in to the salon every couple of weeks to get it dyed.

Typically angled bangs look best on round faces.  Straight across bangs might make your face look fat.  I would try some long bangs that you can put to the side or straight down and see how it makes you look/feel.

You girls are absolute dolls. (If you only knew the secret...yellow lighting is more forgiving than stark flash and I feel naked without my Shiseido stick foundation...I'm a works-in-progress with acne scars up the wazoo)

I think I need a new stylist...my usual girl tried to cut angled bangs but I felt like they blended in too much with my hair so I just looked a bit too mature for my liking (alright they aged me to 25 year old junior broadcaster-ness when I'm usually getting mistaken for 16)

Hmmm...I can't afford to go to salon to get red done every two weeks...at least not in LA. So I guess no red. I think my office would've freaked though. I'd look really punked out.

So what shade(s) of brown could I do? I don't want to do the blonde hair thing a lot of Asian girls do because it's not me...but how light could I go? (Can you tell I don't know crap about color and my only aim is to change it...)

Regarding your hair color, I would really think about dying it. Since you are looking to go lighter, it strips your hair and is damaging in the long run, and can be a big pain to keep up. If my stylist/colorist wasn't my mother in law, I would have given up on hair dye by now. If your hair grows really fast, or if you are interested in a color that won't blend gracefully with your roots, I'd preceed with caution. But, I'm not trying to talk you out of it.

However, an aquantance of mine with pretty dark hair tried a product that I believe she bought at target. It was a color rinse that lasted a day or two. It wasn't damaging and I think it came in both natural and not-so-natural colors (she used the purple). Any how, if they had a caramel color or a red that you could try out, that may be a suggestion. Of course, there are always semi-permanent hair dye that you could experiment with.

If you do go with permanent hair dye, resist the urge to do it yourself, you don't want orange, fried hair!

Yes if you dye your hair go with just highlights, they really brighten up your face, plus only a few pieces get damaged, not all of your hair.

I have a round face too, and I have longer angled bangs and they work.

red can be a lot of maintenance, but it's not bad if you are willing to accept that it will fade. (usually to a reddish orange) i do a lot of asian hair at work and i think light brown tends to work better than red. your hair is going to pull warmth no matter what, so it will definitely be a warmer brown.

if you  prefer red highlights (which i think look BEAUTIFUL with dark brown/black hair) i would recommend getting them done, and then once every two weeks toning them with something like clairol jazzing or radiance at home. much cheaper and easier. (and accessible at sally beauty)

if you are getting lots of layers, i recommend getting a full head highlight.

ps dont let them bleach and tone.

definitely go for color girl! color is the best way to break a hair rut. i would definitely get partial highlights. especially if your hair is layered, it's the best way to show-off texture in dark hair.

as for bangs, honestly i would say no. i would may have a hairdresser thin out the hair around your face and maybe do some side-swept pieces but as far as bangs... i don't know. you have a really small forhead and round cheeks.. i think some whispier side-swept longish pieces around your face would work.. but straight-up bangs.. or heavy side-swept bangs a la ashlee i think would be too harsh for you.

also you look like you have ALOT of hair. i'm the same way. i have soooo much hair on my head. i constantly have to thin out my hair with many many layers to keep it from looking too heavy or weighed down. have you thought about making your hair piecier on top so that you hvae more volume? i think you could thin out the back of your hair so it's not as weighed down and blah.

sorry to babble on. i've always had a desire to be a hairdresser and would cut/and still cut my gfs' hair in college. i wish i could draw you a picture of what i think would be awesome for your hair! i love doing this stuff.
