I'm thinking of going to a dermatologist. I have really bad wrinkles for my age (22), they are getting worse at an alarming rate (I swear they've doubled in only one year - and I'm not exaggerating. I've counted them. Because I hate them so much). I look WAY worse then people my age, and older than many people a decade older than me.

So I guess I have two questions:

1) Would it be totally dumb to make a whole appointment just to get advice on how to prevent/treat my wrinkles? I've tried a lot of (expensive!) creams and stuff, and nothing seems to help, so I feel like professional advice is in order. But it's not like I have a disease or am unhealthy, so I don't know if this is something a doctor would feel like she's wasting her time on?

2) Is $100 a reasonable estimate for how much a visit would cost? I have insurance, but it's super crappy so I'm sure this visit would have to be out of pocket.

NO you are not dumb to make this appointment, you are very very smart. The doc will probably recommend a retinoid cream which is cheaper than most dept store creams but very effective in preventing wrinkles.

I have felt stupid for going to the derm for minor pimples and things like that esp when a couple offices asked me if I had cancer and if not, they wouldn't treat me! I'd try to look for a derm who is a little more .... concerned with looks, or a little more spa like... The one I go to has a derm but also an aethetician and they do things like Botox, etc. In this environment, I believe the doc will be more likely to help with wrinkles and the looks of your skin rather than just the health of it.

I don't think it's stupid at all - I agree they'd likely prescribe a retinoid that will work better and be cheaper than OTC stuff.

Offices are really used to getting calls about the cost of their office visits - it's something the receptionist should be able to tell you, or the office manager/billing person if it's a larger place.  Some places have different prices if you're insured or not, also, so ask.  Then you'll be able to figure out how much it's cost you if you know what your insurer covers, or you can call them and ask, since they're used to those questions, too!
