Do you ever feel like the world would move so much more smoothly if you did every job yourself?  I do.

I just feel like things are constantly being lost or misprocessed ALL the time and I always have to spend my time picking up the mess.  Not so much at work, but stuff like the bank making mistakes, people at stores and restaurants making mistakes, and the post office losing stuff and opening stuff.  I feel this kind of stuff happens way too often.  And the managers are not willing to accommodate you in any way.

I mean just in the past few days, I have had

1.  The post office lose a package.  The post office open a package and return it because of a piece of paper that they never told me I wasn't allowed to include, as well as damage my book.  And then I spoke to the supervisor who basically told me I was SOL because I didn't insure my package and they are allowed to open mail whenever they want.

2.  The waiter at Ruby Tuesday charged my debit card twice.  Once for my portion (authorized) and another time for the entire table of 6!  This threw me into a panic because the huge charge would have made a good portion of my outstanding checks bounce.  Of course when I called the manager, she said there was nothing she could do because she could only find the receipt for the correct amount.  I called my bank and my bank called her on 3-way and got her to finally authorize the funds to be returned to me.

3.  EZ Pass wrote me a "final notice" saying that if I don't send them a check in 10 days, they will fine me.  Not only had I already sent the check, but they had already cashed it about a month ago!

4.  I don't know if I can blame this one on my bank or motor vehicles, but the check that is automatically sent through bill pay from my bank to them EVERY SINGLE MONTH was returned as undeliverable.  The address hasn't changed or anything.  And of course each of them blame the other and say there is "nothing they can do".

5.  When I cancelled my spring course about 3 weeks before classes started, they never put my reimbursement through.  In fact, they never cancelled my class.  When I called to check on my reimbursement, I found out I was never removed from the class.  They then told me I wouldn't get a full reimbursement because I was cancelling after the course start date.  I argued and argued with her that I cancelled it way before the start date and she just kept saying that she had no record of it and that is the policy and "there was nothing she could do about it".  I had to send an e-mail where I included her supervisor, my professor, and the dean of students before she would finally reimburse me.

I know this sounds really negative, but it just seems like I can't trust any of the companies I deal with.  I'm so frustrated right now!  I have wasted so much of my time on other people's mistakes.

i agree, it is very frustrating to deal w/ people who can't/won't do their job right.  but as far as i'm concerned you're handling it perfectly, because nowhere on that list do i see aj saying oh well there's nothing I can do about it.  keep fighting the good fight sweetie.

also, and this is gonna sound so parental so forgive me in advance--catching and fixing other people's mistakes is helping you learn a very valuable lesson that will serve you well in life.  for example, now that you've been promoted, you will probably have to delegate work and keep tabs on people to make sure they're doing their job right, and you can't swoop in and just do their job for them because a.) you'll drive yourself crazy and run yourself ragged and b.) they will resent you for it.  so all these negative experiences that you're dealing w/ right now will help you when it really counts.  trust me.

i was just thinking about this stuff over the weekend because i heard a statistic on the radio from some study that was done, and apparently a very high percentage of americans (it was like in the 80% range) are disappointed and upset regularly by the lack of customer service in american businesses.  i think as our world has sped up, the human element (generalizing here, of course) that goes along with commerce hasn't kept pace and been re-trained and educated to deal with it.  not that any of this is surprising, but you aren't alone, AJ.

i'm going to spend my afternoon on hold to get through to tivo, to have them reissue my $100 rebate check for the THIRD time because they keep claiming that they have sent it and i never receive it.  i bought the box in october.

In my new position, I will be supervising assistants.  I won't actually have an assistant, but I am supposed to give them guidance and make sure they are working on the right things (whatever that means).  I think having an assistant would be challenging for me because I would always feel that if I just do the task myself, it will definitely be done the way I would like . I would run myself ragged and my assistant would surf the web all day.

i am just like you -- i would so much rather do something myself than first, try to explain it to someone else (who in my head is totally incompetant), then trust that they have followed it throught to completion as well as i would have.   i would rather do the work myself than risk having someone else do it slightly less right.
