have lost 15 lbs and still feel fat!
Permalink Closed

i have been working out religiosly for the past 6 months and have lost 15 pounds- however- my pants are still snug like they always have been through the hips and thighs- my trainer knows this is the area i want to slim down the most so she has given me a LOT of exercises to work on it.

what i am thinking- is that i am bulking up in the thighs instead of slimming down and toning them- does anyone have any insight to this type of problem?

I have the same freakin' problem!  When I was a dancer/dance teacher and doing 5-8 classes a day, my thighs were HUGE!  I also tend to build muscle quickly so that didn't help.  After I stopped dancing, my thighs shrunk considerably, but not as much as I'd hoped for.  My advice would be to not lift weights.  Concentrate on resistance exercises and do not under any circumstances work your quads.  Pilates has really helped me slim down my thighs, have you tried that?

i started a new job about a month ago that requires me to travel A LOT- so for the past month, i have not been able to go to my pilates and yoga clases (which i went 3 times a week to those)- and i think that is part of the problem b/c i have really noticed a difference in the past month with my thighs getting bigger.  since i have been traveling i have been just doing my regular workout my trainer gave me instead or working out on the road.

Cardio cardio cardio....

Weight training will definitely tone your muscles, but if the fat that is there never goes away, it will always look and feel the same (with muscles underneath).  Cardio is the only thing that helps shed the fat.

This is the same reason why you can't really spot-reduce (exercise that target one area only).

trust me- i cardio cardio cardio out the *SS... plus the weight training plus the pilates plus the yoga.  i work out 4-5 times a week.  but since i took this job i stopped the pilates and yoga and only do "straight workouts".

i seriously think that the lack of pilates is killing my thighs... they are HUGE for sure...

Bex - I apologize if I sounded offensive...  You hadn't mentioned cardio in your first post, and I know when I went through the same problem a few years back, I never realized how important cardio was.

Have you tried to Pilates DVDs some of the girls have been talking about?  I travel a lot as well for my job, I always carry my laptop, workout DVDs, and a jump rope with me on all my travels.  Jumping rope has been a great cardio exercise for me, and I think it has helped me slim my thighs..

maybe a change in your diet?  I started using the eating for life eating plan, and it really helped me get leaner.  The other trainers at my gym noticed and asked my trainer about it!

Walking/running usually helps with thighs but if you are blessed with big thighs like me (my friends use to call them dancer's thighs) then you might need to change your weight routine when you do them.  My old trainer said if you want to make your thighs leaner and not bulky (not building muscle) then you do a low weight (like 20 pounds) and do as many reps as you can until you get tired or reach 100.  Then your muscles will lengthen and not get bulky.  It might be worth a try.  I'm going to start back on Tuesday doing it so I'll keep you posted on how I'm doing.

Joina -- Basically, six small meals a day.  He has a recipe book that I have been following, but the basic concept is pretty easy.  Plus, you get one free day during the week to have at what ever my piggy little heart desires.  It really helps me to stay on track during the rest of the week.  It's about 1500 calories a day for me and the food is yummy and easy to make.  He does make use of some protein powders in his smoothie and dessert recipes, but I don't use those.

www.eatingforlife.com has some recipes  :)

no no- not at all!  i am just frustrated b/c i felt like i have been doing everything right.  up until a month ago, i worked out 4 times a week. 2x i did 45 mins of cardio and an 1/2 hour of pilates and the other 2x i did 45 mins of cardio and the rest of my time was doing weights/resistance that my trainer gave me to do.  since i took this job, i have only been doing the later and cut out the pilates.  i am just wondering if it was the pilates that was trimming down my thighs and behind and not all the exercises my trainer gave me for that area.

lsubatgirl: another friend recommended the less weight more reps idea to me as well.  i am going to try it too.

right now i am reading "french women don't get fat" and it is offering a lot of tips on eating and lifestyle that i am trying to adopt as my own.  i lived in paris for a while and i was the skinniest i ever have been when i was there and all i ate was bread, cheese and pasteries and drank wine all the time....
