Going out alone
Permalink Closed

Tonight I can't find anyone to go to a vintage fashion exhibit/fashion show with me. So I was bummed that I'd have to miss it. It wasn't until a couple minutes ago that it dawned on me that I can go by myself if I want to. I still don't know if I'm going to go because the idea of going alone is a little weird to me. I can't decide if I'm too dependent on other people to do things like this.

How often do you girls go places alone? Not just shopping or to get coffee, but I mean to a movie, etc.? Do you feel awkward when you're alone at a place or event where most people are with friends? If you can't find someone to go somewhere with you, does it stop you from doing something you want to do?

I go places by myself a lot. Mostly to movies or to get dinner though (I will actually sit at a table by myself). I don't have any problems hanging out by myself. Of course, you see a lot of that in big cities so I am usually not the only solo person there. You should go tonight!!

I'll go for a casual dinner by myself or to the bar/lounge part of a restaurant by myself for dinner.  I have gone to a concert by myself and enjoyed that.  I would rather not go alone to a function that requires mingling.  That's when I feel weird.

I don't mind going out by myself.  Usually it's lunch or for a glass of wine or something.  With two small kids at home (I'm a stay at home mom), I relish time to myself.  So, when I feel like it, I'll take a good mag or book, run down to the corner bar and have a glass of wine with adults or, now that they're in school, go to lunch or something.  I usually bring something to read, so I'll go to casual places so a book on the table doesn't look too tacky.  I've gone to the movies and museums by myself as well.  No issues here.

I say you should go!  It'll be good for you!

Go. I bet if you think of it as work related (since you write about lingerie), you'll feel less strange.

I don't feel awkward alone - far from it. Sometimes it's actually preferable to being with a companion. You can show up and leave when YOU want, sit where YOU want, talk to whoever YOU want...

I do a lot of things on my own. I think movies, plays and exhibits are actually the easiest (and sometimes most pleasant) things to go to alone. In fact, I prefer going to exhibits on my own. Usually when I go with a friend I wind up doing more talking than looking and sometimes I'll even go back by myself a second time.

I totally agree.

I really enjoy going to movies by myself in the middle of the day. I'll also go out to bars by myself if no one else is up for it.

I think you should go tonight, it sounds like it will be fun and interesting!

Recently I really felt like going out to get a drink at a lounge/bar and I couldn't find a friend to go with...normally I would just sit at home wishing my friends were free, but I forced myself to go alone and it ended up being fine/normal and I noticed plenty of other people there alone.

I don't think it's a big deal and in a way I think it's sad/disappointing that more people don't just do things alone -- I'd hate to miss out on something I really want to do just because my friends aren't free/etc.

lol, i think i'm the exact opposite, actually.  I've never had dinner, drinks, and/or gone to see a movie by myself but I've gone to plenty of functions that required lots of mingling by myself.  The mingling functions are actually easier for me because then I don't have to worry about if my companion is bored/wants to leave because my companion is me!  Plus, I get approached much more by myself than I do when I'm with someone.

Oh and shopping alone is one of my favorite pastimes, if I've had a bad day, it will always make me feel better.

I love shopping alone, too. I really hate going with other people, actually.

I agree! I used to go to the movies a lot in high school/college by myself (because apparently I have "weird" taste in movies) and I also love to shop alone. I could do a lot of things by myself, actually.

I go to movies and museums/exhibits by myself all the time. I love going to a movie by myself in the middle of the day. And I travel to a lot of weird, little towns with nothing to do, so I enjoy going to movies at night then as well (by myself).

I do feel weird going to dinner by myself though. I don't know what that's about really. And I've never gone to a bar by myself, although I definitely would, especially to a neighborhood and/or hotel/restaurant bar.

I was always tempted to go places alone when I was single, because I felt like it would force me to seek out conversations with strangers, as opposed to my "girl group huddle dance" thing when you go out in groups.

And yeah, I'd have a hard time doing the mingling thing alone as well.

It never really dawned on me that I could go places alone other than shopping. I even don't ever go dining with my daughters without another adult. I've only done it once, and it was totally fine. I should definitely try to go see a matinee movie while my oldest is in school and drop off the youngest one with a babysitter. I need some ME time!

I went to go see SATC by myself. No-one I knew wanted to go. And, I was determined, and went by myself. It was freaking great! I just think if you want to do something, do it. You'll have fun no matter what.

I also go to bars by myself, but I know the bartenders locally and usually end up seeing people I'm friendly with. I don't think I'd go to a city and go out alone. I think I'd be uncomfortable.
Eating out alone would be uncomfortable for me at an actual restaurant, but somewhere like au bon pain wouldn't be a big deal. I know, that's weird.

Go alone! Thats the kind of thing that you could totally swing alone. I think I spend alot of time alone, prefer shopping alone definitely. Fashion/beauty exhibits are doable alone and you will probably make small talk so it won't be that lonely.

I have a friend who goes out all the time. She's constantly on travel for her job, and she has no problem going to the bar or going out for a nice dinner by herself whenever she's on the road. She says she actually meets a lot of people that way.

I love shopping by myself, I feel like I can actually think. I am a really fast shopper and I feel like others are so slow and I have to wait all the time.

I would have gone with you!  I wish I would have seen this sooner.  Was this the thing at the Museum Center?  I'll PM you with my contact info for next time.

I don't have any friends who care about fashion (except one but she lives in Houston!) and with three boys and a husband I never get to do fun, girly things-it's all football, basketball and baseball around here.  I have resorted to making my boys watch TLC with me.  The 5 and 6 year-old actually like What Not to Wear now (much to my husband's dismay)!

i go to bars/dinner alone alot.  i live in a smaller town, so i usually end up knowing someone.  i used to travel alot for work, and i think that was the tihing that started my dinners for 1.  if i didn't go alone, i wouldn't have eaten!   i've never gone to the movies alone, but i would.  i usually just wait for the DVD.

i shop alone and prefer that.

i have a friend who goes on vacations alone all the time.  she has gone to st. thomas, vegas, NYC, san fran, and several other places just because she wants to go.  she also has gone to europe alone for a month.  she went to spain, italy, france, and a bunch of other places.  i wouldn't want to go to europe alone.
