Doggie Drama- update

Two weeks ago, my BFF and her FH adopted a one-year-old black lab pup (BL) from a rescue society. Our dog and BL have gotten along great so far so BFF asked me and SO to watch her for the weekend while they went out of town.

Last weekend they came over for a bbq and BL peed on the carpet. They apologised but made no attempt to clean it up so my SO had to.

This weekend while we looked after her, BL was really good until we went out for a couple of hours on Saturday night. Both dogs were in their crates and BL managed to bust the door off of hers (it was plastic, our is metal). She got into the garbage, ate garbage, barfed up the garbage on our bedroom carpet; poo'd and peed on the floor and the carpet; chewed up my brown Steve Madden flats and SO black leather belt and chewed a hole in the carpet. We were gone less than 3 hours and they house looked like a bomb went off when we got home.

Knowing my BFF (and we have been friends for 17 years so I know her well) she won't do anything to help us out. SO says he doesn't care about the wrecked shoes and belt, as long as they pay to get our carpets cleaned. I'm not confident that will happen, my BFF won't see that as their responsibility.

If you were the owner of BL, what would you do for your dog sitter in a situation like this? If you were me and SO, what would you do?

How awful! I would be pissed as hell if that happened to me. You were doing her a favor. I'd definitely tell her everything that happened and present her with a dogsitting bill that lists the damages and costs to repair/replace. A hotel would do that and basically your home was the dog's hotel. If I was the owner I would be so embarrassed and offer to pay for the damages without question.

It bugs me that the BL peed on your carpet while they were there and they did nothing about it. How inconsiderate.

I'd also suggest they invest in a crate with a metal gate to keep this from happening again.

Good luck and keep us updated!

I think that asking them to take care of the carpet, both by cleaning it and replacing the portion that has a hole in it) is fair. If my dog did that, I would absolutely pay for the damages, and probably give my friend a giftcard for a night out or someother kind of gift too as an additional 'thank you, I'm sorry'.

If your friend doesn't offer to take care of things, I'd ask her. It is only fair.

And, I also wouldn't allow BL back in my house again either.

I have a firend whose dog has taken to peeing all over my house on 2 occasions (I think it's because I have a girl dog). She didn't clean it up well the one time she tried. Now when she brings her dog by, I put him directly in the back yard. I also don't offer to dog sit for her, am busy if she asks, and don't ask her to sit my dog either.

I would definitely expect them to pay. It's not as if it was your negligence that caused this, it was her crappy dog crate! If I were you, I'd approach it as if you already expect her to pay. When she picks the dog up, say "BL ruined the carpet. I haven't been able to call around because it's Sunday, so I'll call you after I get an estimate and know how much it will cost you. Or do you want to call around yourself?" Maybe it's a little forward and aggressive, but it sounds like you can't count her on her pick up the tab.

That's awful! I agree with what everyone has said -it's absolutely her responsibility to pay for the damages. I like ttara's idea about approaching it as if it's obvious that she should pay for the carpet etc - and also the part about letting her call around for quoes because then it also makes it sounds as though you're allowing her to get the best quote etc. (Besides which she really should be doing that extra work given what happened). As a dog owner I would see myself as fully responsible for all the damages as well as all the extra time and effort it involves to clean up and set things right. Good luck.

I think that is a great approach!

I agree that they're responsible for the damage. Assuming it as a given that she'll pay seems like a good approach.

I'm involved in some animal welfare efforts, and I'm sorry to say this, but they sound incapable of responsible pet ownership. You don't adopt a shelter dog who may or may not have behavioral problems, then after two weeks take off and leave the dog with strangers (and another dog). They have no idea what BL's temperament is, her understanding of new situations, or her tolerance for other dogs. I'm not even sure they should have brought the dog to your house the first time - when she peed on the carpet. That in itself is something that should have been postponed until they had a comfort feel for her behavior and adaptability to new, strange situations and other animals.

They really messed up on this one, from beginning to end. It's great that they chose to adopt a homeless dog and rescue it from certain death, but do you think they can step it up? They may make this poor dog more anxious and insecure just from their sheer ignorance.

UPDATE-
my BFF came through much better than I expected her too. She came to pick up BL's crate and stuff and wrote me a check for $200 to cover the carpet. After seeing how bent the doggie door was, she just couldn't deny what happened. So that's cool and SO is pleased.
