Trip to New Orleans

I originally posted this in the travel and tourism section, but did not get any responses. Any tips would be greatly appreciated:

HI I am planning a trip to New Orleans with my friends and her husband for Feb 05-09, 2009. Can anyone recommend a hotel to stay at, restaurants, and what to see.

We definitely want to check out a haunted tour, and swap tour, and a casino. Any recommendations you have I would appreciate it!

We are looking to pay no more than $500 for flight and hotel for each one of us. Do you guys think we will need a car while we are there?

We stayed at the Sheraton in the French Quarter when we went, but I would not recommend it. The rooms were NOT worth the price there. We haven't been since Katrina, though, so I am not sure how everything is now.

I would get a car. Unless you are planning on just staying in the French Quarter you would probably need one to get to some of the other neighborhoods, but be prepared to pay for the over priced parking. If you don't stay in the French Quarter you may want to park at the Harrah's casino when you go over there. If I am not mistaken I think it is free. I know in the past we have paid as much as $20 to park in lots in that area. That isn't much for a day, but if you are parking several times a day it adds up. Plus Harrah's  is a really good casino. If you have time and a car, you may want to check out Biloxi as well if you love to gamble. It is a little over an hour a way and they have several great casinos there as well.

I really enjoyed the aquarium they have near Canal Street. I think it was called the Aquarium of the Americas. I didn't do a haunted tour, but they have them everywhere so you will not have a hard time finding them. Maybe check out the travel channel's website. I have seen shows on their haunted tours in New Orlean's so I am sure you could find some info on there.

BTW I just noticed you are in San Antonio. I am in Houston and I always see cheap flights to New Orleans so I am pretty sure it would be the same from San Antonio. If you haven't already got it you may go on Southwest Airline's website and download DING. Then anytime they have specials there you can get updated. Also Continental often has good deals to New Orleans.

HTH!

i stayed at a hotel in the French quarter when i was there but i was there for work and i know on your own the prices would be stupid expensive. i would highly recommend going to Cafe Du Monde for benets- so yummy! we went on a bus tour when we were there which was nice b/c it showed us the entire city. i also worked with Habitat for Humanity while i was there as my company sponsored a home.
