So, we just got back from vacation to San Francisco/Bay Area and California's Central Coast. My main reason for taking the bf there is because I want to move there and wanted him to see it. He has friends there (bonus!!!) who also want us to move. Anyway, he loved it and wants to move!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sooooooo...I found a college to transfer to for grad school. I sent for info and I'm planning to apply. I'm also scoping out job opportunities. His friends are willing to help us find jobs and apartments and anything else we need.
But, it's so daunting! I've been wanting to move to California for years. I can't believe it's actually going to happen (fingers crossed).
Any advice for a cross-country move? I'm a little overwhelmed.
I just wanted to say yay! You're going to love living in California. Where exactly are you planning on living in the Bay Area? If you need any info, let me know. Born and raised in the Bay Area.
Not really sure. I guess it depends on job locations. I'd love to live right in San Francisco, but I think I'd be happy pretty much anywhere near the coast.
I have no tips on moving cross country - when we moved, we didn't have much so everything that we owned fit in our car. We were living with seven other people. Anyway, I just wanted to say congrats on deciding to move out here! I hope everything works out for you guys. I'm from the Central Coast originally but live in the Central Valley now. Ever since my husband got out of the Navy and we came back here, he's been itching to get the hell out of Cali but I tell him that we'd probably end up right back where we're at - there's no place like it.
California is awesome :) I've lived here my entire life and can't imagine living anywhere else.
Just out of curiosity, are you applying to UCSC? I saw your Facebook photos and noticed you spent time in Santa Cruz. If so, I went there for my undergrad and can't say enough good things about it.
Kitty, no I'm applying to the Academy of Art University for the MFA in advertising. I looked at UCSC for the digital art and new media program, but that requires two years full-time. I couldn't do full-time grad school and full-time work (not with a program that intense, anyway), so I checked out other suitable programs instead.
I don't know how I've made it this far in life without moving to California. Whenever I'm there I just feel like I'm home. I've never, ever felt at home on the East Coast and especially not in the area where I live right now. It's awful. I feel like a misfit here. Can't wait to move!
My advice for a cross country move? Just do it. Commit that you aren't going to let anything stop you. Otherwise, everything will stop you, because it is a lot of work and it is tough. I moved to San Francisco from Colorado three years ago, and then out of the country this summer, and both times it was the commitment that made me stick it out.
You'll find lots of opportunities for people in your field in SF and along the SF peninsula.

Awesome! I know a lot of people that have gone to the Academy of Art and loved it.
Good luck on your application and hopefully you'll be out here soon!
Thanks, Kitty. I talked to the admissions officer via email today. I have to get the application process rolling soon for spring '09. Not sure if we'll move in the winter (bad weather) or wait until spring, but hopefully, by next summer we'll be out there. I'm so ready to get out of PA.
MissMabel, you're totally right! I've been wanting to move for so long, but just kept letting things get in the way. This time, I feel better about it and I'm glad I waited because I met the bf and he wants to move, too. My biggest concern is the job hunting process. I hate it and I can't imagine how it's going to go with a 3000 mile distance between me and potential employers. I'll get it done, though. I'm already scoping out jobs, even though I'm not ready to move just yet.
I just got back from San Francisco/Muir Woods/Redwood City/San Mateo on Monday morning.
I completely understand what you mean! I met a lot more people that live in the city and moved there within the past couple years and it was a test of sorts to see if I'd like to relocate and I'm thinking about it myself!
My friend Chad who I stayed with is actually going to the Academy of Art. I'm thinking about getting a masters in journalism or new media.
I'd love to talk to you more about this ... maybe on facebook.
manhattanmonkey, feel free to message me on Facebook. I check it a few times a day in my downtime.
ETA: Since you mentioned new media, I wanted to let you know that after talking with the advisor, I decided the MFA in new media was the best fit for me, considering my background, skills and current grad school program. It's the most similar to what I'm doing now and I'd rather not get an MFA in advertising. I feel new media is a little broader and more complementary to my skill set.
