What Should I have Done?

While I was nannying this morning I was making the boy's smooties and the blender broke.  The three yr old said "my daddy's going to be SO mad at you" so I felt bad and we made a trip to the store and I bought a new one. It was $115!!!! I didn't do anything to break it, i.e drop it, it just broke while blending, the plastic around the blade cracked. Anyway, my family and friends are saying it wasn't necessary to buy the family a new one, what do you guys think?

UPDATE: okay, so good news!! She (the mom) reimbursed me :) crisis averted!
p.s. i guess i made the wrong decision since not one single person voted for wehat i did LOL

Blenders break, it's something that they do. If it wasn't your fault, I don't think you should have bought a new one. Did you already give it to the family? Do they know that you did? If you didn't, return it. If you did, there's not much you can do. If they don't know it though, I'd say "hey I'm sorry but your blender broke while I was using it.  I don't think I did anything but it just broke.  I went to such and such store and bought you a knew one."  Maybe they'll offer to reimburse you.  I'd take the old one however, because you can probably replace that plastic part that broke.

I actually also broke a blender while babysitting. I was cleaning the kitchen for the mom, even though it had been left DISGUSTING before I got there, and it was a surprise for her, anyway I knocked the glass jar of the blender onto the floor and it broke. Because I did actually knock it to the floor, I replaced the glass jar (but not the whole blender.)

I'm sorry that happened, I know those things can feel kinda scary even if they're not your fault!

I don't even see the need to apologize. It wasn't your fault. I think you just should of brought it to their attention to what had happened and left it at that. If they are like most people they wouldn't make a big deal of it. It's just a blender and you were using it to feed their boys. Maybe you let the boy's reaction get to you. They make big deals of little things. Hopefully it's not to late to return it or ask to be reimbursed from the family.

Aww that's so nice of you. Like cahabo said, little kids make a big deal out of things. I would just mention to the family that the blender stopped working (it is a small appliance so that happens) while you were using it. Most people, especially since you are working for them and it's expected that you use things like that, will understand. You might tell them you weren't done and he really wanted a smoothie so you ran out and grabbed another one. See if they will reimburse you for it or if you haven't used it yet just return it. If you are able to return it because you haven't used it, you could offer to get them a new one, but I'm sure they wouldn't accept it. They would just appreciate the gesture. At any rate that was super nice of you! Most people would pretend they didn't know it was broken.
