i am considering taking a position that would base me out of Chicago. I've been to visit and I've been to work but never considered moving there so I'm trying to figure out cost of living, etc.
It would be both my husband and I- no kids- and we are currently in a 2 bedroom apartment unit so we would like to stay in that size if possible. We might consider going to a one-bedroom for a year or so until we get our bearings and maybe move again. We like to go out to art events (theatre, music, art galleries/museums) and we love to be able to sit outside at outdoor cafes enjoying a cocktail (or two or three). Another thing, we will definitely have one car there and it would be nice to have parking with the apartment. Also, I'll be flying several times a week so if there is something close to a train line to take me to the airport, that would be helpful. Although, as I'm writing this, I could just take a town car too, I guess.
Anyway, that would be our wish list. Is there some neighborhoods that you could direct me towards?
I would definitely look at the Lakeview/Wrigleyville area. It's right near wrigley Field. (go Cubbies!!) but they have a lot of places with garages, it's right near a train, it's a pretty affordable area. You can walk to a lot of places, good restaurants etc. I would consider looking into getting a realtor to help you a bit more. If you'd like I can give you the name of the women we used to sell our old place in Lakeview and helped us find out new place. She's super friendly and we loved her!

sorry! i thought i was so clear and i totally missed telling you guys that we will want to rent for a year until we figure out where we definitely want to be and then buy. So- whatever areas you think are best for renting with the qualities I listed.
Collette- thanks for the ideas of neighborhoods. We actually have a friend that lives in Wrigleyville and loves it.
It all depends what you like. Lakeview is great. SO and I lived there for years and loved it. Wrigleyville is not for me - it's way too busy and congested and I don't like dealing w/that. We just moved to the Bucktown/Wicker Park area, and I think it's my favorite place that we've lived in the city. I think you get more for your money too. A 2 bedroom or even a 1 bedroom is pricier in Lakeview than it is in Bucktown/Wicker.
It's also a much easier/shorter commute for both SO and I to our jobs from Bucktown. I work in the Loop and he works in the Gold Coast.
If you want more info, or have questions feel free to pm me!
lol! it covers the mid-west. i just have to be based out of chicago. if i get it, i'll be heading to Chicago first and my husband will come after he finds a position- which sucks for him b/c i will have to choose our place to live based on what we like and his commute might suck for a year until we move again. i'll check out the places you suggested and i'll definitely PM you if i need more assistance.
