Back combing: tips and tricks
Permalink Closed

I've noticed lots of girls wearing hairstyles lately with lots of back combing. Everytime I try it, it never looks as neat as others I've seen.

Does anyone have any times on doing a good back comb? Do you use a brush or comb? How do you keep it smooth but still have volume?

the trick (at least i think its the trick) is to get a "teasing" brush. my is/was a marilyn brush (i say was b/c i learned at the last show that marilyn was bought by someone else and changed their name). it kinda looks like a giant toothbrush. it really helps to get the volume. i also use a light hairspray when doing it as i have supa fine hair. i tease the crap out of the area i want the lift and volume with and then take my regular brush and smooth over the top layer.

One tip I learned is to use hairspray carefully. Be sure to hold the bottle back far enough so you are misting the back of the hair you want to tease.

Also, tease the hair you to which you want to get the volume, but keep the top layer that will show away from the hair that is being teased. After teasing, smooth the unteased layer over the teased hair for a smooth look. It probably would help to use a flatiron on the unteased section--and maybe a touch of smoothing cream or light paste.

This is what I do.  I use either a brush or a comb, because the whole trick is in keeping the unteased layer for finishing!  Just spray the teased part and secure with a bobby pins before you place the smooth unteased layer over it.  Take the smooth hair and kind of spread it evenly over the teased section.  Then secure with more pins and give it a final spray and you will have the smooth look plus the volume and it will stay put.

I love the look, it's kind of sixties, so I also go slightly darker on the eye makeup and nude on the lips to complete the look.
