Does anyone have any knowledge about buying a mattress? It's about that time and I know nothing. I'd like to keep it as affordable as possible, but I don't want to go cheap or anything.
I know I should test them out but I find the whole process to be ridiculous. Laying on a mattress to make sure you don't hate it is one thing but there's no way you can tell if it will be a good mattress over the next 5-10 years by sampling it in the store.
Here is a link to a previous thread that I think will be of help to you: http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=44784&p=3&topicID=6944590
I looked at some Kingsdown you recommended in the last post but I couldn't find any that weren't over $1500. That's a little much for me. Any suggestions for where to look for a more affordable Kingsdown or similar mattress?

Around here I think some discount furniture places have some of the ones with discontinued covers. Other than that maybe just try contacting Kingsdown directly: http://www.kingsdown.com/ It's been a few years since I sold them, so I'm not familiar with what they currently offer but I can't imagine that they don't offer a starting price point of lower than $1500. Aren't they dreamy though!?! (Oh, and I got mine at cost since I was working at a furniture place, that's the only way I could afford one of the top ones! *sigh* I miss getting furniture at cost).
I know that this is gross to a lot of people, but in terms of finding an expensive mattress at a cheaper price, you might do a search on your local craigslist. I bought a very lightly used mattress via craigslist that feels great and looked new, for less than a third of the original $1500 price tag.

sorry, dawg, but all i can think about is bedbugs :( my paranoia of this will forever keep me from getting a used mattress.
I bought a Kingsdown 6 years ago from Art Van that was discounted to around $800. They had recently got in the new models and had my bed, still in plastic, discounted since the manufacturer wasn't making that exact one any more.

So maybe I should just look at stores that carry them and try to find one that's been discontinued? Anyone know when mattress season is? Is there such a thing? Is there a time of year when new mattresses come in and old ones go out?

Haha, mattress season I would think after spring or fall market would be when a mattress would be discontinued but still have some stock of it, know what I mean.

Whotelsthestore has a 40% code right now (39Y9G); their mattresses are equivalent to Simmons Beautyrest. I got a plush king mattress for $744 w/no tax or delivery.

Do you know how long the code lasts? I'm going out this weekend for more bed shopping and if I like the Beautyrest line, I might go for it since I'm itching for a new mattress now! now! now! Also, do the delivery guys take away old mattresses?

I PM'd you back; I think it's good til 4/30. According to the fatwallet forums, they do take it away, though I can't seem to find it on the site anywhere.
