the new forum format we're getting (phpbb) does not have all the bells and whistles our forum has :(  I'm trying to change this, but we currently are not able to just copy and paste images, and won't be able to embed videos.  the image posting will be back to the [img] brackets dealio, although it's not difficult, it's just the extra steps I'm not thrilled about.

it's going to be different, but we've done this before and we can do it again this last time... we'll all get used to it and forget what this forum ever looked like eventually...

the new general site on the other hand, is going to kick ass! that will be something to look forward to!smile

UPDATE

I've just been told these things can be programmed in (it just doesn't come with the original package)

I've also been asked to come up with a list of capabilities that the new forum doesn't currently have.

That got me to thinking that the STers may have some good input, so before I send the list I'd like to hear from you...

Besides easy posting of images and embedding videos, are there other features you can't live with out?  Maybe there's a feature on another forum you like that you would like to have on the ST forum? Please post them here...

I like the search feature (although it hasn't been working too well). I like that we can search in a specific forum instead of the entire forum or search by user name and back track up to 30, 90 days.

I like that we can easily "quote" a previous post and reply is on every post.

I actually would love a better-functioning search feature. Unless I've been doing it wrong (which is totally possible), it's impossible to click back from a specific thread without having to re-do the search; and it seems to sort arbitrarily without the dates going chronologically... and also the year is not visible on the date stamp. Can't think of anything we don't have that I'd want, though!

well, I'll look into the search feature, compare it to our current search functionalities, and see if we need to tweak it... if it's screwy, we now have a tech person who can go in and make the changes as we need them.

what about our links at the top navigation (store lists, coupon codes, etc?) do you guys use those?

what about live chat? we have it at the right of the forum, but no one uses it --  so I'm assuming we don't want that?

I'm not sure about everyone else but I don't use the shopping quick link or coupon code link. I think if someone is looking for a code they start a thread.

It doesn't seem like anyone uses the live chat anymore.

Actually, I've referred to the store list quite a bit, so I'd love to see it on the new forum.  I also love the coupon code database, but I think it's a little out of date - if we can keep it more up to date, I think it's a great resource.

 ditto!

I also agree that the search feature is cumbersome without being able to sort by date.

I think the coupon database is a great thing to have, but it's not very useful in it's current form.  IMO just organizing it so that the newest code posted is at the top would be easier to navigate - you could just scroll down to see what recent codes had been posted and it really wouldn't have to be edited to remove inactive codes if they just fell off the bottom after 3 months or so ...

the coupon code database is not a part of the forum, but we will be building a new database as part of the general site.  I'm not thrilled with our present database, and that will be taken into account when we design the new one.

are there any in particular you do like? like reesycakes? could we live with something similar to that?

part of the problem with expiration dates is that not all codes have them, and some codes are also good for years...

I love the search feature and the private message option. I really hope we can keep the inbox and outbox features in the new forum.

do you mean the PM inbox and outbox?  I can enable email too (through your ST profile), not sure how you all would feel about that (my assumption is no)

I like the live chat, but i've only participated once or twice. I feel shy and akward about it if only a few other people are on. Maybe we could do something to energize it.

Is it possible to make it so that once you've opened a chat the chatbox could move to the center? Or make the "send a message" more prominent? That's one feature that I think would be really cool if we could give it some momentum and get it rolling.

I don't know if this applies, but I like when forums have options that allow you to pick the colors or themes of how you would like to view the forum.

D, this is my very favorite coupon site:

http://www.retailmenot.com/

You search by site, but what I really like about it is the ability for people to comment on codes (if they worked, when, when they expire, etc) and vote if they worked or not, so you can quickly see the validity of any given code.  It's a nice comprehensive code resource because so many people post, and IMO they do so because it's very easy to post a new code (or a comment about a code).

HTH!

Ditto, that's my fave coupon site as well because I love that people can comment on whether or not those codes worked for them.

While I think the live chat feature is kinda cool, no one here really uses it very much, so I think if you're going to have to pay extra for it, then I'd skip it.

Also, I know that a lot of ST gets paid through the ads, but could we move the ads to the bottom of the page? I can't scroll down to the forums until all the ads are loaded, which sometimes can take a while. It's obviously not a huge big deal--I think I'm just impatient. smile.gif
