with all the fires, i mean.  the hot, dry, windy weather sure isn't helping.

i was running errands today, and by the time i came home, i was covered in a very thin layer of ash.  i tried wiping the floors/countertops, and GOOD GOLLY were they black.  and i'm a good 20+ miles removed!

i hope everyone else's problems are as trivial...

I'm about 30 miles from the fires but you can definitely smell it and see it in the air. I hope this doesn't get as bad as in years past.

I'm a bit removed from the fires since I live in the city, but we've kept our windows closed today. The winds were whipping around like crazy last night. I had to go to Ralphs and it was a exercise in dodging debris when I was walking. I had to get wire to keep some doors (where the electrical meters are) shut outside our unit because they kept slamming against each other.

I hope this is the worst of it, but I know our prolonged drought isn't exactly helping matters. I hope everyone else is doing okay.

I'm flying to San Diego tomorrow--I hope it isn't a problem! I know there are fires in Malibu, but didn't know that there were fires in SD as well. Does anyone know where they are in SD?

this is what i gleaned from the LA Times:

In San Diego, the Witch Creek and Harris fires burned out of control this morning, whipped by gale-force winds. Smaller fires popped up in parts of eastern San Diego County. Interstate 15 is closed south of Escondido.

The fire moved south into the city of San Diego through the San Pasqual Valley, heading toward the Wild Animal Park and the community of Rancho Bernardo. Qualcomm Stadium opened as an evacuation spot.

Thousands of homes were under mandatory evacuation. At least one death and 14 injuries were reported.

Checking in from SD to give everyone an update.

Fires are really, really bad here.  You will be fine flying into SD NCShopper, just expect to see volumes of smoke and expect to feel like you are at a cookout the entire time you are here.  I live in downtown (well removed from the fires), but the entire city is covered in a film of haziness and smells like smoke.  It is also HOT, HOT, HOT.  96 degrees today at the coast.  Zero humidity.

250,000 people have been mandatorily evacuated from their homes.  An entire trailor park in the outskirts near Fallbrook was destroyed.  Many, many homes in Rancho Bernardo have burned to the ground and they just don't have much of anything contained.... problem is that the Santa Ana's are sticking around for at least another day.

My boss was evacuated at 4 am this morning.  Last we heard the closest fire was still a few miles from his house, but as quickly as it is moving, I am concerned.  He has 6 horses and the horses and his family are currently being sheltered at DelMar.  They are living in Jockey quarters.

What is really crazy is that they have evacuated people to high schools and then had to re-evacuate them elsewhere because the fires have been springing up and getting close to evacuation centers.  Hospitals have been evacuated, etc.  It is a nightmare.  The hotels close to my house have lines of cars waiting at check in...

My office was shut down today as it is too close to some of the highways being used for evacuation.  We are shut down again tomorrow... It is really crazy.  I've never seen anything like it (and hope never to see anything like it again).

Anyway, please keep everyone out this way in your thoughts (and if so inclined, in your prayers as well).

Thanks.

Checking In from San Diego-

Its pretty bad here. where I live all the schools are closed down today and people are being told to stay home from work. All major freeways leading into and out of where I live are closed down as well.

My parents were under forced evacuation (they live a few freeway exits away ) but my dad refused to go and he is staying trying to protect my parents home. I am very scared for him.

This fire is really far reaching, it hits SD county - Riverside county and LA counties. Thosands of people are being evacuated all over this area. I just heard at least 250,000 people have been evacuted so far.

So far the 15 freeways, 91 freeways, 241 & 261 freeways , 76 freeway, 79 freeway is all shut down. Currently only the 5 freeway is open but they are considering closing that as well because the are worried that the fire is going to jump other areas onto the 5.

So far were ok, but I am really worried for alot of friends and family.

I live near Six Flags Magic Mt where there are 3 fires going on, last night they feared they would turn into 1 big one, but they no longer were saying that this morning. I went into work yesterday and immediately went back home the "Castaic Ranch" fire was on the hills right behing our business park. My boss and my cousin were evacuated from their homes, fortunately we don't live near the hills communities and werent in any immediate danger.

All schools including our college have been closed. The smoke was really bad Sunday and Monday, but since they got the water planes in (I've been hearing them fly over all morning) the fire is a bit more under control.

An Update:

Some evacuation points are being re-opened and people are being allowed back into their homes.  The largest fire, "the Witch Fire", is not controlled or contained.

On a personal note, my boss gave me the sad news today that his home was lost last night in the fires.  He is one of the best people I know and I feel physically sick for him and his family.  Please keep him and all others impacted in your thoughts and prayers.

that awful, jah! These fires are so scary!!

This is probabaly a dumb question, but will insurance cover the homes that are lost? or is it considered an act of god or something like that?

I'm not sure about others, but his insurance will cover his losses.  He is very risk averse (we build risk management software as our business), so knowing he lived in a fire area, his insurance is very, very strong.  His insurance company is already working through the claim with him.
