Aveda?? Rant/Review
Permalink Closed

After much research and debate I bought 2 products from Aveda which had such great reviews on MUA.  I am not overly impressed and I'm wondering if maybe I just need to use them MORE or maybe Aveda is a ripoff.

Camomile Shampoo, $25, pricey but the bottle is huge.  I wanted to lighten my color without the damage of dye or bleach.  Used it last night.  Made my hair soft, but color no difference.  Claims on MUA say people are asking if they got new highlights, how much shine and what a difference it makes, etc.

Phomolient volumizing foam, $13.  I have fine hair but hate how volumizing treatments have lots of alcohol so I went with this.  MUA claims it is the holy grail of volumiziers, volume and shine last for days, etc.  I found the volume was negligable, and it smelled like a bear had nibbled on a tree then licked my head.

Am I using these products wrong?  Should I give it more time?  I am tempted to walk into Aveda and return them!  I feel duped!

I've never been a fan of Aveda. In fact, some overnight guest left a bottle of some color protecting styling foam. I ran out of my Bumble and Bumble stuff and out of desperation used the Aveda. It made my hair feel crunchy.

I've never been a big fan of Aveda because I don't like the herbal/natural smells. I do have some products though and I find them to work well, as long as the smell doesn't offend me too much.

If they aren't working for you, take them back. As for holy grail products, they never meet expectations. Sucks but true.

I'm not a fan of Aveda for the same reason as blubirde, I find the herbal smells to be too overwhelming.

However, when I had colored hair I used the color depositing shampoo, like the Chamomile, and I did find that it worked really well.

I have liked some Aveda products in the past but since trying the Bumble and Bumble and Pureology lines I haven't gone back...that said, you should probably give the chamomile shampoo a little bit more time.  In my experience products that boost color/shine need several applications...you shouldn't expect to see results after one application.  Keep using it...obviously the lighter your hair is to begin with the quicker you will see results.  In terms of your expectations...again depending on how light your hair is to begin with...the shampoo should help to bring out subtle hightlights but don't expect a drastic change...otherwise, why would anyone still need to go to the hairdresser for hight-lights?biggrin

I'm glad I'm not the only one.... In the words of Michael Kors "I'm underwhelmed"

I do agree I need to give the camomile more time. Maybe I am more disappointed not because of the products but because I wanted to believe the hype I read.

The only Aveda products I use regularly these days are Damage Remedy shampoo and conditioner and the toning mist for face.  I have their Brilliance hairspray but I don't buy it exclusively.  I like the Carribean Therapy bath milk (you might like that because the fragrance is really light and it makes skin soft in the bath).

I love the Aveda fragrances, but a lot of the products haven't made me swoon.

Give the shampoo more time.  It sounds like a lot of those spectacular reviews are a bit stretched.

Every time I use Phomolient, I like it a lot.  I use it throughout my whole head of hair- - concentrating a little more on the roots for lift.  I like what it does for my hair.  It holds style but isn't stiff.  Double check that you are using an appropriate amount.  See how much a stylist would use at an Aveda salon.  Sometimes they use more pumps and squirts and larger dallops than I would think to use at home.

I use Aveda products on my hair.  I love the Shampure line. I also use Phomollient and it gives me great body and volume.  I only put one dollop on, not two or three like it says on the bottle.  I concentrate at the roots, comb from roots to ends and then blow dry as usual.  I think hair products work differently on  people so what may work for some people may not work for others.  I have fine/thick straight Asian hair so maybe it's more suited for my hair type. As for the scent, I don't really mind it.  It may just take some getting used to if you're not accustomed to herbal scents.

I have really fine hair and I love the Phomollient foam. I use a couple of squirts for my whole hair when my hair is still a bit damp, and it's the best volumizing product I've ever used (and I've tried a whole bunch). I wash my hair daily so I also use the foam daily.

I used the Rosemary Mint shampoo and conditioner for a few months and it was okay.  It smelled good but was just average.  I really don't think it was moisturizing enough for my hair though, and obviously neither did my hairdresser because she switched me to Bumble and Bumble at my next visit (or maybe she just wanted to me more money off me?).

I've mostly tried hair stuff from Aveda with mixed results.

Rosemary Mint Shampoo and Conditioner: LOVE the scent, but I'm a sucker for the herbal-y scents that Aveda products have as a whole. The formula was too drying for my hair, but works really well on my BF's super-short oily hair.

Shampure Shampoo and Conditioner: I like this just fine...it's not nearly as moisturizing as I would like but otherwise very pleasant smelling and effective when my hair is not color-treated. Once I started highlighting my hair, this made it look like crap...mostly because it was stripping some hair color. I clearly should've switched to something for colored hair, as naturally jet-black haired me has some VERY platinum blonde streaks due to color stripped by Shampure. I've affectionately dubbed them my "dumb blonde" streaks.

Light Elements Smoothing Fluid: When I first bought this, I thought it was ridiculously overpriced, but figured I had little to lose. I'm a chronic overuser of product. I usually would go through a 3.4 oz. bottle of hair stuff in 2 months because my hair is so thick. It took me 6 months of everyday use to finish this. I just tried to replace this with the Boots version in the glass bottle. The Aveda is by FAR the better value, plus it comes in a nice, durable plastic bottle.

Pure Abundance Hair Potion: Friend tried it when we were shopping at the Aveda store together. The SA was stalking us and begged her to put some in her fine hair, singing its praises on its ability to magically thicken hair and create volume. It made her clean, healthy hair feel dirty and look oily. thumbs down on this one!

Whether or not a shampoo will work for you is highly dependent on whether your water is hard or soft. So the people who said it was great may just be washing their hair with a different type of water.

That being said, I've never been very impressed with anything from Aveda (but I've always lived with fairly hard water).
