How high is too high?

Hey ladies, I joined the forum a while ago and then got caught up in the world of schoolwork so I couldn't be an active participant, but I hope to change that now!

So here is my dilemma... I just started law school (straight out of college) so I haven't had very much experience with professional business attire. I have a reception coming up with Judges from the area (who could potentially be my summer employers!) and I know I have to wear a suit, but my real issue is the shoes. I was planning on wearing plain black pumps but my roommate saw them and told me their heel height was too high and "sexy" for a professional environment.

So my question is, how high is too high of a heel for a business formal type environment?

I think it depends on the shoe and on the suit.

Is it a pant suit or a skirt suit? If it's pants, I'm sure the shoes are fine, because people will only see a glimpse of them.

If it's a skirt, then I would make sure they don't ditract too much from the suit. Do they really stand out?

I think the most important thing is to be 100% comfortable in them. I think even 4 inch heels look amazing with suits, as long as you can walk and carry yourself comfortably in them and not stumble around and fidget in them.

Magnolia, I have no advice on heel height, but I also just started law school (right out of UG). It's nice to know there's someone else on ST going through this at the same time as me!

If they are just "plain black pumps" and you're comfortable walking in them, then I don't really see the problem even if they are quite high-heeled.

I agree too - it may depend on the area you live. In CA, no problem

If they are just plain pumps, I think they're fine.  I'm a lawyer in LA - and I wear black pumps frequently.  As judges tend to be quite conservative, maybe your friend is a little cautious?  Best luck at getting a summer job!

I'd personally wear up to 3" in that enivornment, but certain plainer shoes could have a slightly higher heel and be fine
