My best friend's father was just diagnosed w/cancer. I'm by no means close to him, but have known him for 20+ yrs and have always had a great relationship with him. He lives across the country and I want to reach out to him in some way - was thinking about sending him a note but have no idea what to write. Any suggestions on what to say or do? :(

I think that's really sweet of you to want to send him a note, I'm sure he'll be touched to know that you're just thinking of him. I think you should send him a nice card and just tell him that you're thinking of him and sending him your prayers/good thoughts. My step dad was also just diagnosed with cancer and he likes to get nice cards that let him know people are wishing him well.

Hmm...that is tough. I like what needsfashionadvice had to say. Something along the lines of, "I'm so sorry to hear the news. I just wanted you to know you and the family are in my thoughts. If there's anything I can do or if I can be of help in any way, please let me know."

I'd be hesitant to write too much more than the basics, because you don't want it to come across as if you're saying goodbye forever.

I agree with the above advice. Something short and simple to show that you're thinking of him is best. Sometimes a cd of music or book on tape can be a nice present for someone who is dealing with an illness where they have to spend a lot of time in bed.

just a note with positive encouragement is a very nice gesture.  you realize who your real friends are at times like these.  there are people i have known for years who decided to cease contact with me when i told them about my cancer.  I think some people either figure you're dead or just don't want to expend the effort to be supportive.  just a little note or phone call would have meant a lot to me -- support from family and friends goes a long way.
