I moved to a new apartment earlier this summer and I hate it. I hate the neighborhood, but it was "affordable" by Chicago standards. I hate my apartment sooo much. The back door only has 1 lock and looks like it would be pretty easy to kick in. When I looked at the place, the screen door was torn.  The lady showing it told me the previous tenant ripped it when moving his furniture out. A couple days after I moved in, I was taking trash out and I noticed all the screen doors are ripped in the same spot right by the locks. What a liar! This place is not secure.

Oh, and my first time doing laundry (which btw, they only have 2 washer/dryers for 25 units) was great. I went to get my clothes out of the dryer right at the time they would be done, only to find that someone had thrown in a load of sopping wet jeans with my almost dry whites.

When I moved in, the maintenance man came over to inspect my air conditioning unit and told me I couldn't use the one I had because it would blow the fuse. So I returned it for a small one that barely cools down my bedroom. He said he would install it for me and then charged me $25. I paid it because the forecast was predicting a big heat wave and I just wanted it done. He also told me that if I did happen to blow a fuse after 5pm, I would have to wait until the morning to have it fixed because tenants don't have access to the fuse boxes. So, tonight I'll once again be going to bed without power except for the area I set my computer up in and the fridge. Why? Because I keep forgetting that I can't run any kitchen appliances while the kitchen light is on. Silly me.

End of rant!

I'm sorry! That stinks! So you can't use any of your kitchen applicances with the lights on, like you would have to make toast in the dark?!? That's crazy!

That seems to be the case...I didn't have problems at first because when I moved in, the days were long and I don't usually turn lights on if I have sunlight. I can always cook by the light of the open refridgerator. That's what I used to wash the dishes tonight. smile

Awww, I'm sorry -what neighborhood are you in?

BTW, if it makes you feel any better, my first apartment in the city was just like that - it was really safe and in a good neighborhood, but it was so vintage and small, that I couldn't run the air at the same time I was using my microwave or TV, or I'd blow a fuse.  And when I blow dried my hair, I had to shut everything off, including all the lights other than the bathroom.  Good luck - I stuck it out a year!

FP- The miner's hat is a good idea!

SC33- I live in Roger's Park. So even though I have direct lake access, my commute is over an hour to go like 7 miles. Good times. I do have a lot of friends who bought in this neighborhood and it is getting better. Plus, it's close to Andersonville, Edgewater, India Town (yum!), and Evanston. However, it can be a bit dicey. The other morning I saw a man pleasuring himself behind a dumpster in an alley.bleh

Before this, I was in Edgewater. Even though my old apartment is within walking distance, it is a different world.

Wow, I'm so sorry.  If it makes you feel any better at one place I used to rent I couldn't use the stove or oven and still have heat.  It was one or the other as we unfortunately found out on THANKGIVING at my house full of people.  Since we needed to eat, everyone had to put on their coats and mittens for the day.  I never cooked besides that, thank God!

Oh, that's awful! As someone who has lived in the crappiest apartments ever, I can definitely relate! I hope you can get out of that dump soon.

Oh you poor thing - I totally know how you feel!
Is your apartment older - like built in the 20s?  Those can be very cool in a vintage-y way but the lack of modern luxuries is frustrating!
I really liked mine though, despite all the frustrations just b/c it was so cool - the hardwood floors, the dark wood doors, the black and white checked floor in the kitchen!
