Help---working retail
Permalink Closed

I currently work one part-time job but need another to pay the bills.  I'm in graduate school so no full time job yet.  I'm thinking of working in retail since there is a mall very close to my house.  Does anyone have suggestions on good stores to work at---good pay? flexible hours? good discount? The more specific the better.  TIA so much!!!

Oh and here's a list of some of the stores I was thinking about...
Ann Taylor Loft
Dillards
Express
The Limited
Macy's

I would definitely cross off Macy*s (although it's very easy to get hired there). I worked there for 3 days before quitting, and when I did (for a made up research project) my boss said "Oh I knew you'd leave soon, you seemed smart". Basically, the discount isn't nearly good enough, especially considering you have to charge everything on your Macys card and wait for a refund the next month. Also, the dress code sucks - all black, either a jacket and pants or a skirt/dress and sweater set (seriously, who has sweater sets anymore?). Other than those two things, I liked it fine enough, but it wasn't enough to keep me there since I was mostly doing it for the discount.

i would probably choose the limited because you can get discounts at vs, bath and body and espress. my friend worked there and no complaints from her.

I was actually thinking of getting a part-time retail job as well to save money for grad school (starting in Jan '08) and to buy a house with SO. I'm leaning toward Express or The Limited because, like another poster said, you get discounts at a ton of other stores that are owned by Limited Brands, ltd.

I worked at Express for men for about 1 day. The pay was slightly above minimum wage and the discount was 30%. We were required to wear at least 4 articles of clothing there was some formula (pants+shirt+blazer+belt). For the pay that I got, I couldn't afford the clothes.

I left there to work at Banana where I earned something like $10 or $11/hr with commissions on shoes. I got a 40% discount with 50% off of featured items.

If you want this job for extra money, stick with a department store.  You probably won't want to buy as much from the store that way, and have your entire check go right back to them.  I also think they are more flexible with hours, but that is just my experience.

I have no input about working retail, but just wanted to let you guys know that Express is no longer owned by Limited Brands, so you wouldn't get a discount there anymore - if that matters to anyone smile
