Reasonably priced furniture? That's not trash?

We need some additional seating in our living room, and are on the hunt for a chair, pair of chairs, or small-ish loveseat.  However, since we're renovating we don't have a very large budget for something like this, and can't seem to find anything decent that is also reasonably priced!

Where do you find furniture that's not astronomical?  Is there no such thing as a nice sidechair for $200-$300?  Even Ikea (which isn't the style we're going for anyway) wants 500 bucks!

Are you wanting club chairs? If so, the style of my glider in my nursery also comes in a non-glider chair and I think it retails for around $400 and it is sooo comfy. The brand is Best Chairs. And you can pick the fabric. Their site should tell you of any retailers near you. I'm thinking of getting some for my living room. HTH!

You could try craigslist. I found the matching chair to my couch for super cheap. I mean- it's used, but when I went to see it it was in great condition.

What about those warehouse places that sell the furniture from hotels and model homes? You can probably find one near you if you do a search on the net. Speaking of model homes, I don't know if they do this everywhere or maybe it depends on the builder but some model homes sell the furnishings dirt cheap when they've finished selling the homes. I know my sister had bought two sidetables for about $60 along with some chairs that were about $40 a piece.

I second this - the Habitat for Humanity home in our city sells furniture donated from builders' model homes, and it's fabulous.  Everything is in perfect condition and current style.

I just got two nice nightstands at World Market. It's all wood (no MDF junk) and (AND!!!) they had free shipping! I had another nightstand of theirs for years and our dining room table and chairs are also from World Market and it's all held up well over the years.

defintely scour craigslist.  also check out freecycle.org for your community.  i've scored random stuff for free through them and have seen amazing office units, bedframes, dining tables, etc. for FREE!!!

don't hesitate to check out auction houses or estate sales as well.  i agree w/NCshopper that you should check out World Market.  they have pretty good stuff.

good luck!

Ebay is also an option. Private parties selling furniture on eBay rarely want to ship, so you can configure a search to only show you furniture within a 5, 10, 25 or whatever-mile radius.

Have you checked overstock.com?  I love it especially since they have reviews if you are weary about actual quality.

Don't know what style your after but...

Evan Toast Chair $299.95 Slipper Sage Green Chair $219.99
Medford Cornflower Chair $299.95 Evan Asparagus Chair $299.99
Sable Paisley Slipper Chair $219.99 Boudoir Berry Chair $299.95

Thanks for the suggestions, ladies smile.gif.  I started checking Craigslist, but so far haven't seen anything just right - will keep on it though.  Interestingly, there is exactly 1 furniture item for sale within 50 miles of my zipcode on ebay, and it's a knarly table weirdface.gif!

Courtney - have you bought furniture from overstock before?  My concern is for the condition of the items when they arrive, and Mr. Elle refuses to buy anything that needs to be assembled ... he also refuses to even look at chairs that don't have arms (even though they'd be perfect for our small space!).  What a decorating party pooper!

We also have a Dania outlet center nearby, but haven't been to check it out yet because their hours are really strange.  I'll post if I find something!

I'm not sure about your style, but have you tried any vintage or thrift stores in your area? I love unique things and all of my furniture (save my dining room table) is vintage, antique, or used. You can find some great things for excellent prices. As for quality, what you see is what you get. You can judge something pretty well when you visit it in person. Also remember that small repairs to cushions or pillows are sometimes a lot cheaper than a brand new piece of furniture.

Also check out www.eurway.com. The quality is good and you can somtimes find great deals.

I have bought from them before.  The only furniture piece was my leather bench.  I only had to put on the legs.  I wouldn't worry about condition in shipping, they pack them carefully.  Of course you can always return if something is wrong with it.

Their return policy says you're supposed to fully inspect your item before you sign for delivery (!) and refuse it if it's damaged.  If you find damage later, it has to arrived back in their warehouse within 30 days for the damage to be inspected.  They also charge a 10%-25% restocking fee, and if the item isn't damaged they charge you all the reshipping fees, too.

Maybe for smaller items, but I don't think I'd be able to be sure enough about an item sight unseen hmm.gif.

Stopped by the Dania center today and saw lots of great stuff!  Might even be able to get a nice dresser too, finally.

Blubirde - I have checked vintage/thrift type places, but all we've found have either been bad 70's-90's overstuffed crap or nice vintage pieces that are carved and just have padded seats.  I haven't tried a consignment place yet though, might have to do that.

I don't think the UPS guy would wait for you to unpack it all!  Plus to repack it would be time consuming.

I know what you are saying about how hard it is to find affordable furniture!  Do you have a Pottery Barn Outlet near you?  I have had much luck at the one near me.  I always go during holiday weekends for the best deals. You have to dig around for un-damaged pieces but sometimes they have awesome deals.  Also, check and see if you have a Ballard outlet near you.  They have the same kind of deals as the Pottery Barn Outlets.  Crate and Barrel has outlets too and has an online Outlet.

Also, try searching your area for furniture consignment stores.
