I need a dress for my birthday...
Permalink Closed

I was invited to a media-sponsored "summer soiree" event on this yacht that cruises between Canada and Detroit on my birthday, so I thought I'd take advantage of the opportunity and make it my birthday outing with my husband. The party will have cocktails and a "strolling dinner" whatever that is - maybe they just bring bites to you on trays, or maybe there's table set up with bites? There will be a band, and the cruise is from 7-10PM.

I'm thinking cocktail attire.  And I think I'd like to wear these Pucci shoes I got a killer deal on (marked down from $900 to $90) that I've never worn.  I'd like to find an empire waist dress that isn't too short - just above the knee or just below, being able to wear a bra (even halter style) would be preferable. something simple so it doesn't compete with the shoes.

I'm also rocking a bit of a tan (i know it's not good for me, but I just want to feel and look as good as I can this summer after all I've been through)

I'm also tempted by the code for fashion chateau but nothing really called my name...

here's the shoes:

any suggestions? just looking for a dress i can feel fabulous in and would prefer a good deal.

TIA!

Great shoes! I'm not sure what your budget is, but here are some options:

Tart Grace Dress in Sea Blue Tart $189

T Bags Short Convertible Dress in Seabreeze T Bags $189 (although not sure about the bra part)

Love this BCBG dress:
BCBG Max Azria Pleat Chiffon Halter Dress

Oddly, it's hard to find empire waisted dresses that don't have some kind of crazy pattern on them - or at least I'm having trouble. I'll keep looking.

very pretty blubirde - for some reason I'm especially drawn to navy, although I love the last on too.

I'm also worried about being over dressed (I wished they put a dress code on the dang invite) and people may show up after work, so something that leans to casual would be best. my other option is to skip the shoes and wear this hayden harnett dress:

Super-sleek and modern knit styling, trimmed in our signature butter-soft leather at the waist and bodice. The Isabelle is perfect for work or pleasure, making the leap from day to evening in one stylish bound. The top is very fitted, with detail stitching on the leather-trimmed bodice and waist. The drapey, soft knit body of the dress skims your calves. You'll get tons of compliments in this slimming and elongating dress. 97% rayon/3% spandex, with genuine leather neck and waist trim.

I also have a maxi dress that I love in black/gray/white pattern - maybe that and some black platform peeptoe sandals?

any opinions on how I should dress are appreciated!

When I think of media parties on yachts, my mind immediately goes to Carrie's outfit from a SATC episode where she does the same.  Here is her dress.

It's navy blue, and about mid-calf IIRC.

I think a knit dress as suggested is perfect for the occasion - not too cocktaily, a good "day-to-evening" look. Red or purple would be a knockout with those shoes.

I think thats beautiful, and I love the neckline. Also you could wear it with sandals more causally for another less dressy occasion.

I really like it! The green shoes and orange clutch are a bit "fall" for me though. Do you have a gold clutch? It would be very pretty against the navy, and go perfectly with the shoes.

I think you could wear your Pucci shoes with that blue dress and it would look great. The dress is simple enough and you have been wanting to wear them.

Have fun on the boat and take a pic of your final outfit for us!

ok, I have a copper leather hobo international clutch/wristlet that I could wear with this:

the copper is close to the shade you see on one of the "petals" on the shoes -- better?

I think the blue dress looks great with the Pucci shoes. You could even use that orange clutch with it.
By the way those shoes are just to gorgeous for words,I'm jealous.

23991854_D1.jpgI found this when looking @ the Lord & Taylor site... looks like one of the colors in your shoes- so many cute dresses to choose from - but they also have an advance fall sale that starts today through Aug5 (they sent out a mailer) - I can't believe it's fall shopping time already!!!

I was going to suggest that Anthro dress on the first go round but I wasn't sure it was "cocktail" enough. I like it with the Pucci shoes as well. I think blue would really set them off, and ITA that you could wear it through the fall no prob.

Copper is my fave metallic color and I think it's so beautiful with navy or dark blue - definitely go with the wristlet.
